Case solved
Drive well and truly flogged
Swapped platter (due to very worn noisy spindle bearings), heads and PCB to donor chassis
Spun up and came ready but still no cap
Loaded LDR and fixed damaged P-list
Power cycle, drive came ready and id with correct cap
Imaged with loads of media defects (to be expected for a drive that hummed along 24/7 for close to 19 years). Try getting that sort of lifespan out of a modern drive :)
Managed to recover 98% of sectors till it quit again
Data looks to be recovered
Have a great weekend all!
.
Great work.
Well done for sticking at it.

Thanks Frank. My Atola highlighted it as an issue and the repair function was able to sort it. I don't have any other tools for Maxtor firmware so thankfully it worked.

AFAICT, module 0x18 is the P-List, yet its checksum was 0xFFFF, so there was no indication that it was bad???
