Hello folks!

I have a WD Spyglass drive that is being a pain in the butt. After pushing the loader to RAM and restarting in normal mode it is asking me for the SA SPT. Does anybody happen to know what that value should be for this family? Or are there multiple different values used in this family?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks Chris.

This has got to me one of my least favorite drive to work on and I just got 2 of them in yesterday from 2 different clients and they both seem to have some sort of firmware issue. Fun times! For some odd reason I always seem to get projects like this in groups....strange indeed.

No worries :). I have one if been working on for a while now. I need to disable some heads in ram so the drive will initialize.

So,...using SA SPT of 2140 when transitioning from kernel mode to normal mode I get the following in the log window.

Service area:

SA dir reading (ABA/CHS)................ : Dir checksum error
SA Access............................... : Copy 0,Copy 1

Configuration reading................... : Module ID 02 reading error Data request error Device Error Detected: "FM ERR HEADER II SIGNATURE INVALID"

Hmmmm,....I think I may be missing something here.

Here is how the drive shows up.

Model : WDC WD40NMZW-11GX6S1
Serial : WDC-ROM SN# XYZ----
Firmware : 01.01A01

Chris,

Are you using the latest version of the PC3000 software? They added it to the family list.

I am using the Spyglass utility. Hmmmm,...maybe I should try using the Pebbleb utility and see if I have better luck there.

I will let you know if I get any different results.

Did you use donor mods for the dir and loader?

The ones from the drive SA will  not work.

Could be you issue.

Yup....that is the problem. I just realized the only donor firmware my coworker downloaded is from the 3 TB version of this drive which of course will not work. I don't have any 4 TB firmware sets that are version 001004V. Do either of you have this one?

Awesome!

Thanks Chris. The next time you are up in Seattle hit me up. The beer's on me. ;-)

And Tim, you know the offer is always open to you although it would be a bit more of a drive for you.

Thanks guys.

It was a shame we didn’t have time in Vegas, but as you know it was also my anniversary that day, so had to do some serious making up….

Well Tim, if your wife is willing to go to a data recovery conference on your anniversary, you know that you have found yourself the perfect woman. lol

Maybe next year we should try to organize some sort of get together the night before or the night of the conference. Could be fun!

Sounds good. Just don’t invite Allen Crist. Last time we got together he ended up dancing down the street naked….. Not a pretty sight.

Update:

I was finally able to get access to this drive using the Pebbleb utility instead of the SpyGlass utility. Looks like the new SpyGlass utility either has some bugs in it or maybe the process is different now. I was using the process listed in the 'how to handle VSC ERR INV FUNC CODE REQ error in 2,5" WD drives.' article from Ace Labs. It seems this still works on SpyGlass drives in the new version of the PC3000 software using the Pebbleb utility but not in the SpyGlass utility.

After I am done with the recovery I may do some experimenting with the new SpyGlass utility.

Chris,

I was able to edit the headmap in RAM using the Pebbleb tool but not using the SpyGlass tool. I am going to the Ace Labs class next week so I am going to ask Mikhail about this. I am thinking there must be a different process for the SpyGlass tool that has not yet been documented. I just got another SpyGlass drive in yesterday and it behaved in the exact same way.

Strange. I know that I read the firmware between spyglass drives is changing a bunch. I have one that I cannot alter the headmap in RAM on. But I also just found out head 0 is dead so it will probably be a head swap anyways.

Tim,

I am attending the 4 day class on hard drive recovery. I went last year as well but I had only had my pc3k express for less than a month. The class is excellent and I would highly recommend it. Mikhail is an amazing teacher and extremely knowlagable.

Frank describes the class as ‘it’s like drinking water from a fire hose’ which is very true. The class covers LOTS of good information but it is hard to absorb it all at one time. The last time I went I took over 20 pages of typed notes in 3 days.

I am am flying out tonight so I can spend the weekend checking out New York City. Fun times!

I will let you know how it went when I get back.

Tim,

You are correct, the class is be taught at Teel Tech but it's located in Norwalk, Connecticut. Norwalk is about a 45 minute train ride from Grand Central station in NYC. It's a really pretty town and it reminds me of something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. The only problem is that you will be hard pressed to anything to do after 9 PM. I went and checked out Stew Leonard's yesterday. It's nice store but they all these weird singing mechanical figurines throughout the store which are kinda creepy. In the vegetable section they had Cindy Celery and Larry Lettuce singing songs about how we should all eat more vegetables. I am just getting over a really bad cold, I was sleep deprived from taking a red eye flight on Friday night, and I was feeling all loopy on cold medicine which made it all the more fun....lol

Amarbir!

Sorry to hear you have not been well but glad you are better. I have had 5 spyglass drives in for recover in the last week. These drives are a rather odd and frustrating to say the least. I will definitely give this a read.

Get well soon!
