Now that I have learned more about data recovery, I can see the evils of trying to recover data from a bad drive using software.

However, I have a question... Often on a bad drive you can copy/paste pretty easily w/o any issues.

I am feeling that if I can get the clients data VERY QUICKLY with a cut/paste I should try in order to save my clients money...However if that doesn't work, I also feel a responsibility to my clients not to continue 'tinkering' with the drive as I know the more times the drive is used and the data is touched the odds of recovery are decreased.

I am a full service IT shop so it's not like all clients are coming to me with recovery issues... Most don't have any idea what's wrong with their PC prior to diagnostics.

Look I know this is one of those things that doesn't have 1 correct answer, but what methodology do you guys use to determine grabbing data vs. drive recovery?

As you pointed out, copy/paste in an OS is very taxing on a drive as the heads travel up to 60 times a second over the platters making any issues with a bad drive worse very quickly. Personally I hardware image every single drive that comes through the door (any drive that doesn’t require cleanroom work anyway) so we get the best chance of recovering their data.

When you do that and it's an easy job (select and go) do you discount the cost or do you still charge full data recovery pricing?

Image first if possible bc you never know...that drive may have the only picture of grandma or a child...or something else that cannot be recreated.  Then let the customer decide to what extent you should go to recover.

If there is nothing wrong with the drive then I tell the client that (issues like bad USB bridge boards is a good example). I say I can do a complete copy of the drive for $95 if they would like me to.

As Tim suggested -  i do the same. I first image the drive and check the copy statistics of the imaging process - if there are no bad sectors i treat it as data extraction from good drive, if the drive had bad sectors it is defined as a data recovery service.

Do no harm!
As professional Data Recovery Experts we should always strive to recover the maximum amount of data for the customer while using Best Business Practices from the industry.  There are no short cuts in Data Recovery. We mostly have only one chance to recover the data until the drive fails. So we owe it to our customers to provide them the safest, securest means to get them their data back. What separates us from the corner computer store is we have the knowledge and tools to provide them with outstanding service.  They may never realize what extents we go to get the data back, but it is our satisfaction of a job well done.

As we used to say in the Army, it is not what we do when someone is around that defines us, but what we do when no one is around.

Soapbox moved back under the desk :)

That's a good way of doing business. You get their data first.

I agree with Frank, there are no shortcuts in data recovery. Imaging is more advisable on a sick drive than simple copy and paste. My main principle is to work the patient drive to the minimum amount possible. Hard drives are cheap, data is irreplaceable.
