I am working on a data recovery with a seized motor in a Seagate ST3300656SS SAS drive (Dell branded Cheetah 15k.6). I opened the drive to confirm the issue, but haven't touched anything other than confirming that the platters are very hard to spin.  When I was inside the drive I noticed that not only does the drive have spacers, but the platters are not a standard size.  As you can see by the model number, the drive is a 3.5" size, but the platters are much smaller than standard 3.5" drive platters and also bigger than 2.5" drive platters.  I have platter tools for standard 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives, but not for the platters in this SAS.  Any tips on swapping platters in this drive or other methods of getting this drive up and running?  I do have a perfect donor drive from another drive in the RAID set but I still need to figure out how to get the data off this stuck drive.

I also had exactly the same case a little while ago. I made enquiries about a commercially available tool but there isn’t one as they are relatively rare. Also I understand the tolerances on these drives are very tight and platter swaps are dangerous. I did find someone who can swap out the motor on these drives, so if it’s a RAID it’s probably worth it. PM me if you interested in knowing his details.

Hello All

The best platter tool that I found to date costs a Princely sum of $9,45.  It is a Watch Case Wrench.  Loosen 3 screws on the spindle, adjust the wrench to fit the screws and carefully rotate the spindle.

I hope that this helps.
