Fusion Drive Question

Good morning. I have a customer who has an iMac with a Fusion drive. The 3TB drive is clicking so I assume it is the one that failed. He did some internet sleuthing and it was suggested that he format the SSD to have a better chance to communicate with the other drive. Yikes. He did so and now the SSD is useless for data recovery. The 3TB drive (1ER166-044 with a black label) needs heads. The prices on these drives seem to start at around $270. Two questions:

1) Is there potentially enough data available to make a head exchange worth it? I seem to remember doing a couple of similar recoveries and not finding tons of data.

2) Is there any place to find these drives at a cheaper price or is there another part number I can use?

With just the HDD he will get maybe 50% of data back at best. It larger files such as videos it will be even less. But as there will be no file system you, will have to image the whole drive. Which if its had a head swap and as it’s a 3TB Seagate DM may be a challenge (if not impossible). Best to open the drive before committing to anything.

 

Check the preamp of the Seagate. If you get the first 3 of the serial and the preamp it should be good. No need to get the Apple black version.

The SSD had all the file system metadata, so you can only do raw recovery with the HDD.

The HDD likely has media damage (H2 or H3).

For the donor you need the preamp and PN match (1ER166), there are newer Grenadas with PN 2DM166 and they are not compatible with the old ones.
