I got two of the same drives and both of the units I can read the rom via ROM adaptor but for some reason my DFL tools tells me the ROM is already unlocked and fail to unlock, but via the SATA adaptor, the firmware is locked and can't get any module access for SMR repair and recovery.

On one forum, they say short TV9-10 on these models but not that, this is a 2017 model and can anyone see if any other tool can read and unlock ?

Thanks

The ROM is not locked on these drives. But you will have to turn off SED to get access to the SA.

Another option is the SATA corresponding unlocked board

If you are doing this try to get a SATA PCB from the same model drive. As using the wrong gold/white writing on 3tb and 4tb drives kills the PCB.

Sorry guys, my fault I am using one of these new usb-sata adaptors from DFL but for some reason is my tv9&10 short tool bad. I did a manual tv9&10 short and got modules, disabled mod411 restart and am busy to read mod190 and see how it goes. But I suspect heads is not good anymore.

cheers

Just curious. AFAICS, the only way to kill the PCB would be if the physical connections or voltage requirements for  the HDA or spindle motor were different. Otherwise I don't understand it. :-?

Weird
We never use any kind of pin shorting with GX6 family

I suspect it is due to a weak or a bad head, I will swap heads today and will let you know if it fix the module access issue.
