I just encountered this.

   Model : ST8000DM004
  Serial : ZR11RXVL
Firmware : 0001
Capacity : 8 TB (15 628 053 168)

image.png

The customer board was overvolted - killed diode and fuse
So this is a donor board - but gets bootcode locked.

We removed rom and read it rom reader
then used the pin programmer to write rom to donor board.

but now the donor board powers up with helf dim lights.
reverified the rom checksum is correct.

Is there some security bits in the rom ?
What is going on here?

Can we see the patient and donor ROMs? I suspect that there will be a digital signature which is tied to a key in the MCU.

The second container is the active one.

I think this is why you can't move the patient ROM to your donor PCB.

if you want to try something
I can test it for you.

I don't understand. I thought you had already recovered your client's data (after the PCB repair). Are you now just experimenting?

I don't know whether this would be safe, but I propose to replace the patient ROM's signature with the donor's, and then transfer the patient ROM + donor signature to the donor PCB. Of course the relevant checksums/CRCs would need to be adjusted.

If you would like to try this, then tell me which serial numbers belong to the patient and donor. Preferably, choose a donor with the same boot code version as the patient (to eliminate one variable).

I confess that I don't understand what the MCU's kernel code is looking for when it validates the signature, but we might be able to find out. In any case, I've seen other threads where there is an error message in terminal if the signature is invalid.

yes I did recover the patient data by fixing the board.

The RXVL drive is a donor
its a virgin
doesnt spin up
but we could experiment with the bootcode stuff if you like.

I notice that ZR12D3YR and ZR11RXVL both have signatures and certificates in the same place, but ZCT1DRYM does not have any signature AFAICT. This suggests that Seagate didn't initially lock this model.

I also notice that the boot code is the same for the ZR12D3YR and ZR11RXVL, plus they have the same digital certificates. This suggests that the  certificates are tied to the firmware content and not to the MCU. The digital signature follows the certificates and differs between the two drives. This suggests to me that the signatures are indeed tied to the MCU.

Therefore, it would only make sense to experiment with the ZR12D3YR and ZR11RXVLdrives. At least that's the way I see it.

This is an example of one certificate:

Does ZR11RXVL now fail to spin up with its original ROM, or are you saying that it fails to spin up with the patient's ROM?

RXVL

was a parts drive
unopened virgin
board seems ok but doesnt spin up

It was donated as a non-working drive.

Doesnt respond to ^Z

on read attempt it gets DRD DSC ERR ABR

terminal outputs this

Does ZR11RXVL now fail to spin up with its original ROM, or are you saying that it fails to spin up with the patient's ROM?

Does the patient PCB + patient ROM spin up the dead donor? If so, I'd like to try spinning it up with patient PCB + donor ROM + patient signature.

I dont have another matching locked bootrom drive
customer picked it up.

RXVL board spins up the DRYM body

DRYM doesnt spin the RXVL body

I dont think that its seized - it makes no noise at all

Bad motor or headstack?

Does the RXVL board still spin up the DRYM body if the HDA is isolated? If not, then this would suggest that the PCB needs to detect the headstack before it will attempt to spin the drive.

You can test the motor by measuring the resistance between each pair of terminals. It should be between 1 and 2 ohms.

I expect you should see an error message similar to the following if the firmware detects an invalid signature (this is for a 16TB model):

Flash boot code Digital Signature Verification failure!

Flash boot code checksum failure!

Wow. It appears that all the motor windings are open circuit. Your good drive measures 1.4 ohms per phase (2.8 ohms phase-to-phase).

It would appear that the MCU doesn't need to detect the headstack in order to spin the drive. That's useful to know.

I'm puzzled as to how all 3 phases can go open without any electrical damage to the motor controller. Weird.
