Evangelists -

I backfilled the data portability timeline [1] with historical dates,
and created a simple admin tool to maintain it [2].

As I'm not as plugged into the daily news as much as others are, can
someone who's got their finger on the pulse keep an eye on it?

Specifically, things like today's Google Contacts API supporting oAuth
is a good candidate (which I just added 'cause I'm thinking about it).

Thanks for the help,
=jtrentadams

(PS The reason for the admin tool is to make it easier to create
alternate outputs, such as RSS feeds, if the need/desire arises.)

J.Trent Adams - you rock.

I'd be good to see everyone contributing, but I know when you make a
request like that, no one does. So can someone nominate themseves as
chief "watcher of news" to update the timeline. Preferably someone
that doesn't have things on their plate already - I'm a bit worried
certain people are picking up multiple projects which are critical for
us, and yet another thing is only going to overburden them.

So to reiterate Trent's call - any new takers?

Elias, Trent,

That's good and useful stuff.

I could take to backfill some entries, with similar criteria for news/articles selection,
as we've been tracking similar topics for a while. Will probably need to first experiment
to see how the admin interface works..

Cheers,
Aaron.
PS: to be sure, me not nominating self to this "watcher of news" in Elias' context.. ;-)

Chicken!

Anyone else want to step up? I really think we need a dedicated team
of people who are watching the news for three core reasons
- for getting us to post comments & engage with the community
- for bookmarking & our reference
- for the time line to show how the conversation is evolving

I've taken a look at the timeline page and the admin interface.

I was thinking, if it would help to separate timeline items of DP (ie., from "ourselves" as an "organization"),
and those many from the public (ie., major dp-related announcements from major companies or entities)..

For example, either separate into 2 timelines, or 1 timeline 2 sections, or add some tags when posting to
the admin interface, or whatever the proper way to do it better..

Reason being, there are so many 3rd party items, when backfilled, or when going forward..

Regards,
Aaron.

Aaron -

Sounds like a good idea to me to indicate a "type" for each entry.

If you (and others) want to list out the types that make sense, I'll
jam 'em into the admin tool to start capturing them. Then we can work
out display parameters (eg. in-line indicators, separate lists, etc.).

(PS I'm totally open to any other suggested modifications to make this
process easier. The reason for the admin tool was to simplify our
lives, not make things harder.)

Trent,

Was mainly thinking of only separating between ourselves' and the industry's
(for the purpose of easier to find our timeline items.)

Re the tags, just free format, simply something like the wordpress tags..

If to be strongly typed, would be at least two major categories, one would
be vendor/provider by name, and the other would be protocol/api by name,
but I don't think we're ready for the dp protocols shortlist yet.. so, this part,
might be for later (or might not be necessary if the tag cloud works out well.)

Cheers,
Aaron.

Did we get any resolution on this?

We are falling far behind on the updates :)

Someone should listen to the InMotion podcast for the new summaries that we missed - they are great hehe

Chris -

I think the resolution is that no one's got the cycles to take point
and update the timeline regularly.

I see that Christian and Phil have jammed some more recent dates into
the Wiki. Perhaps it'll remain on their radar for a while.

Unfortunately, my effort to make updating the wiki easy, while not
losing future flexibility, has failed. The database version is being
bypassed and the wiki itself is being manually updated.

Since it doesn't seem to be adding any value to the group, I'll humbly
remove it from the pipeline and shelve it. We can always bring it
back if someone finds a reason to leverage the output of the timeline
in a format other than the wiki page.
