Logo Team -

I see the logo and brand usage page has been updated:

http://wiki.dataportability.org/display/dpmain/The+DataPortability+Brand+Usage+Guide

I'm about to change the logo placements I have under my control.
Before I do, though, are we sure what's on that page is what we should
use?

The reason I ask is because the version on the voting page had a more
"three dimensional" look (and was kinda' shiny). I'm hoping the
"flat", two-color version was only to speed up the stickers and that
within a couple days we'll see versions of the one that was voted on.

... then again, maybe I'm the only one that voted for this one
particularly because of the nifty 3-D shininess.

Anyone have more definitive knowledge?

Trent,

That is a good question. I just uploaded vector art for the new logo
and tossed it up onto the Brand Usage Guide a couple of minutes ago.

Based on conversations we had over the weekend, as we were preparing
the stickers (http://flickr.com/photos/danielabarbosa/2437218258/), we
did indeed forgo the shiny, bubbly look for something a bit more
elegant.

There was never an official conversation, however... Personally, I am
not a big fan of the bubble look, but I'm sure there are a myriad of
opinions out there.

Thoughts?

Brady -

Yeah, I figured the "gotta' get stickers fast" discussion was the
driver for ditching the "bubble look".

I assumed, though, that it was only "flattened" to address the speed
to print concern, and that we'd use the "bubble" version more
universally.

IMO, it's important to use the actual logo (or as close to it as is
technically possible within context) that won the vote. To do
otherwise calls into question the validity of the opinion of the
community.

Am I in the minority thinking this way?

We'll use variations in color, size, field (like the suitcase behind the old logo), and style. For example, the bubble outlines and color gradients don't scale well at small sizes.

I think we should create a team to specifically investigate how to use
our brand. I don't consider anything official unless its had some type
of consensus - which the above discussion indicates has not - and by
default, the voted in logo is our brand.

I agree with Phil and Brady's comments, but this is an example of on-
the-fly decision making that it worthwhile of deeper discussion. So my
only request is we drop wording of anything that this is the
"official" way to do that until we have a bit more consensus.

It may well be the participants of the website or logo team are the
people that form this team, but it needs to be made explicit that
those people have the delegated authority to make that decision. It's
the only way we are ever going to reconcile the two different cultures
(those from big company backgrounds who favour process; and those from
small team/entrepreneurial backgrounds who favour action). Delegated
authority to a small team gives the process, whilst the small team has
less limitations to follow process that suits everyone to make
decisions (enabling us to embrace the agile nature of something small)
