Hi everyone,

In short, I'm back after 2+ months out of it due to day job
commitments. I am the chair of the vision task force, and we really
need to finalise this ASAP which has become a bottleneck for us thanks
to my situation. Our goal is to put this to vote by next week, so we
can move onto the bigger pieces of work that will fall out of this.

The importance of this is it will form the DNA of what the
DataPortability Project is (officially)

This is the draft: http://wiki.dataportability.org/x/SoA0

This is the plan
- daily conference calls at 2100GMT. However the first call will be at
2130 GMT starting in 7 hours because I really need my beauty sleep.
- goal is to discuss issues that by weeks end we have consensus by
people who participate
- as Chair of the task force, I will recognise the input of anyone and
will make changes to the proposal if rough consensus is met
- the proposed draft will then be put to vote for adoption at the next
steering call in a weeks time

Be in the chat and I will add you to the conference call

Cheers!
Elias

Sorry, I cannot make it tonight, too much workload after being back
from vacation. I will join tomorrow's call.

My point basically is though: With all those social networks doing
their own style of "opening up" and with all those standards developed
which more or less support data portability there should be some focus
on privacy as well. Not privacy the service defines but one the user
defines.

I also don't want to discuss ownership as I think we can leave that to
lawyers. For me it's more about having control over data you put into
a system. I am not sure what this relationship to this data can be
called if we try to circumvent the word ownership but in general I
would like to be able to control where this data goes. Both in terms
of venues which are now not possible because of service restrictions
and in terms of where not to.

Maybe we can just add something a la "... while trying to protect a
user's privacy". I actually think if possible it should be in the
vision as I don't think that the only goal should be the portability
but also the policy under which this happens. I think this is a very
important part esp. right now. I thus see this with evangelism as our
main work right now. Esp. making those standards writers aware of this
problem as many standards right now seem not to take this into account
too much (microformats, FOAF etc. Maybe by putting OAuth in front but
few do this and few give you actually the option to e.g. remove
microformats from your profile page).

(I think Jonathan Vanasco posted quite a lot about this general topic
on the general list as well).

PS: Will there be some notes or recording of the call?

In line with DataPortability's transparency, this call was recorded. Many thanks to Trent, Nick and Francesco for their input.

Next call is at 2100 GMT Tuesday (ie, 21.5 hours from now).

Here's the link to the MP3: http://www.hidefconferencing.com/wav/conf149171_280466.mp3

(It'll only be available for 30 days, though.)

Enjoy it for the next 30 days.

Our vision appears to be near finalisation, and based on the call today we've identified some fairly intresting strategic implications for DataPortability's role in the future.

Link to the current draft: http://wiki.dataportability.org/x/SoA0
Main changes and consensus
- clarification of "your data" so as to not imply you own your data
- discussion about mission to advocate "user rights". To be continued tomorrow whether that is appropriate.
- agreed that data interoperability is one of the the end goals (the other user rights advocacy)
- agreed on using the world of control (but not ownership). We spent time on the call on why we can, and the implications of saying so
- other discussions not directly relevant to vision, but interpreations of future based on current draft wording

Many thanks to Nick Givotovsky, Christian Scholz, and Steve Reptti for today. There will be another call tomorow, and if necessary, one more the day after before the draft goes for voting on by Steering next Monday.
