At last months’s meeting we brainstormed DataPortability Project (DPP)
revenue strategies and expense priorities.

Spending possibilities for 2010 fell into three categories: organizing
ourselves as a community, communication of our ideas and values, and
operations.
Community:
- Community manager. I think we have duties described somewhere in
the list archives or wiki.
- Recruiting volunteers.
- DPP workshops.
Evangelism:
- Portability Policy Site and marketing campaign
- Travel for speakers
- Budget for PR services including newswires.
- Schwag
- Web Site Projects
- Publishing - blogs, white papers, handbooks
- Event sponsorship
Operations:
- Corporate fees
- Taxes
- Insurance
- Legal
How can we pay for these activities?
Models the DataPortability Project can emulate:
- EFF, ACLU (local club membership + national membership, grants).
- Museum (visitors, patrons, underwriters)
- Research Institute (publications, sponsorship, contracted work)
- Site certifications services like the Better Business Bureau,
Truste (subscriptions, mediation fees)
Broadly, our members, donors, and customers will pay for our activities.
From members:
- Dues. Personal dues get in the way of participation? OR Personal
dues create a sense of belonging and ownership?
- Membership fundraising drives. Asking our members for money, a la
Public Radio.
- Sell merchandise. "I believe in DP" mug. "Let My Data Go!" hoodie.
From services performed:
- Events we host to make money. Conference/Unconference on, say,
portability for lawyers, portability for privacy experts, portability
for interaction designers.
- Government contracts and grants. Monies for work to be performed,
such as education projects, research and reports, portability policy
compliance audits.
Donations:
- Foundation grantsmanship. Donations/Underwriting.
- Corporate grantsmanship. Hitting up companies for underwriting.
- Patrons who believe in the portability vision.
Setting goals for 2010Q1:
- Public Membership opt-in on web site (with a side of fundraising)
- Corporate and Foundation fundraising task force to solicit grants
and subsidize projects
- Project list, prioritized and estimated
