Hi,

This is a long shot but does I need to know damage caused by droughts in monetary terms. States calculate this for floods but I am not sure if this is done for drought. Or if anyone knows where I may find a method to do the same. I would really appreciate it.

Thank you
Regards,
Purnima

Hi Purnima,

I haven't come across official estimates on Agricultural drought loss in monetary terms. But, every state government seeks financial assistance from GOI. That may give you a number. If you want to calculate then understanding Key Indices for declaring drought may be a good starting point.

Thanks,
Naveen

Dear Purnima,

Every state, whenever it is affected by drought, estimates the damage/loss and sends a memorandum of loss to the Ministry of Home Affairs, for financial assistance. These documents are not secretive, but they are not in public domain (usually). Some states have them in public domain. As of now, MHA does not have these documents online. By contacting the respective states, one can access this data. I can also say that there is no official compilation of this data at national level.

Best,
