Hi,

Does anyone have names for Chennai zones and wards?

Info from the Chennai website has Roman numerals for zones and numbers for wards:
http://www.chennaicorporation.gov.in/images/MAP_ZONE_WARD.jpg

Sites like:

http://www.livechennai.com/List-of-Chennai-Corporation-Wards.asp

offer names which are hard to map to numbers as there is not a one-to-one correlation.

Transparent Chennai appears to use numbers too.

I am looking for a list of names that maps perfectly to the Chennai gov't's numbers.

Thanks,

-rajesh

These still miss out the ward names. They have zone names though.

After the expansion GCC has dispensed with ward/div names, in favour of only numbers. Zone names are there of course.

Asked at the Chennai Corporation specifically regarding this so this is legit.

Already tried cross referencing old to new with no success.

This is all there is.

ZONE NAME ZONE DIVISIONS
THIRUVOTTRIYUR (Zone 1) Div / wards 1-14 14
MANALI (Zone 2) Div / wards 15-22 7
MADHAVARAM (Zone 3) Div / wards 22 - 33 12
TONDIARPET (Zone 4) Div / wards 34 - 48 15
ROYAPURAM (Zone 5) Div / wards 49 - 63 15
THIRU-VI-KA-NAGAR (Zone 6) Div / wards 64-78 15
Ambattur (Zone 7) Div / wards 79-93 15
Anna Nagar (Zone 8) Div / wards 94-108 15
Teynampet (Zone 9) Div / wards 109-126 18
Kodambakkam (Zone 10) Div / wards 127-142 16
Valasaravakkam (Zone 11) Div / wards 143-155 13
Alandur (Zone 12) Div / wards 156-167 12
Perungudi (Zone 14) Div / wards 168-169 2
Adyar (Zone 13) Div / wards 170-182 13
Perungudi (Zone 14) Div / wards 183-191 9
Sholinganallur (Zone 15) Div / wards 192-200 9
GRAND TOTAL ZONES = 15, DIVS = 200

Thank you all!

I found it interesting that Roman numerals still find a use. We could have used Tamil script or even Devanagari or even English letters but GCC used Roman, which are pronounced the same way as English numbers.

Shanti,

It's less policy and more pre-existing habits and a recurring momentary compulsion to just do it like it was the last time to avoid trouble. The people in charge of doing the work do not have the power to take a call on how to name it, etc.

Hi,

Was this resolved?

Wanted help with the same issue of ward number + ward name mapping + Zones of Chennai Corporation and ran into the same bottlenecks.
I found this official note on the Chennai Corporation website: https://chennaicorporation.gov.in/images/ward_details.pdf

This seems to list the 200 wards and details on each ward. Now, I can't read Tamil script, and can't find a version of this in english. Can anyone who can read the script here go through this and tell if it has both ward names + ward numbers? Thanks.

Regards,
Rajesvari
