The Indian customs trade data which used be published at https://icegate.gov.in/DailyList/DL has been shut in public interest by Ministry of Finance.

The relevant gazette notification is here http://egazette.nic.in/WriteReadData/2016/172794.pdf

The hackpad has been updated with changes and some raw data recorded a while ago. https://datameet.hackpad.com/Indian-Customs-Open-Data-hjEpwuyD1kx

Hope to publish more data recorded by my sometime later.

I have filed couple of RTIs on this and if they don't respond in a positive way, hope to escalate it to CIC.

Until something changes, everyone is stuck with the trade analytics portal, data available until Oct 16 http://www.commerce.nic.in/analytics/

I got the RTI reply with the file in regards to why the data was shutdown. The file contains several complaints on the portal https://www.zaubacorp.com/ for publishing the data of what companies are importing into the country.

Several of companies have alleged that the company name and address are also being published along with what they import and export to customs officials and PMO. The customs department decided to stop publishing it entirely as commerce ministry publishes a quarterly aggregated data of trade after consultation with commerce ministry.

No representation has been sought from others what so ever, we can file a petition with both commerce ministry and customs department that they hold a public consultation to decide the matter again. This data of import and exports is published by several countries and India cannot go back shutting it down for few complaints instead of addressing the actual problem.

Can you share the RTI response.

What exactly is the nature of the complaint? Republishing? or creating a commercial product?

Company names, address and even the names of directors is already open and available. http://www.mca.gov.in/MinistryV2/aboutmasterdata.html

So that can't be a big issue. In fact that info is used by many open projects, like https://opencorporates.com/

You are right. We should write letter asking them to reopen. Should we start a hackpad?

The RTI documents are over 150 odd pages. I will need scan and send them.

The main issue not company names individually but along with the trade data. There complaints were basically privacy and loss of commercial advantages over others. I am meeting nisha over the issue over next two days.

Regarding the hackpad, I am yet to compile all the points from the RTI documents. So I will start it accordingly over the weekend.

I am bringing multiple copies of the RTI file with me for ODC. If anyone wants to look into them, meet me at ODC.
