Larry is entirely correct when he says that what we're doing is quite
simple and easily understood. On the other hand, if I was trying to
develop applications that employed these services, I'd want an official
place to test them. Ordinarily, that site would be a central one, but
in
the peer-to-peer world that we're creating it seems much more logical
for each provider to host their own. Having a central place to list all
these test URL's pretty much answers any objections to the scheme.
Having said all that, Chicago hasn't posted such a website for the
WebServices that we've written. The reason is that we consider all of
this to be in the developmental stage and that it would be a
disservice to developers to put something out there that may very well
change without notice. Take for instance DFcommonAccount which we
have now voted to re-do as DFcommonCustomer.
There will be further discussions next week at the TRSA Joint
Committee meeting, and I'm hopeful that we'll get a lot of good
suggestions from the end-users as to what they like, and what they
would like to see. That will bring us closer to a ready-for-use date,
and a time when test sites will be necessary.

Subject: DataFusion Re: Test Server?
I looked at
xmethods.com. It nicely listed publicly available web
services, gave the description of them, and the url in which to access
them from. Most of these web services were hosted on different
servers, this was just a nice common place in which a developer could
look at all available web services in one location. I believe this
for know could be accomplished with a DataFusion Google groups thread
which I will start.
We still have the problem that not every member of DataFusion
currently has their services available over the internet. The
question, which is open for all members of DataFusion to discuss, is
whether or not this should be a requirement? Should DataFusion
members have to make available their web services over the internet so
developers can test them? Obviously this would be ideal and would
make testing the interoperability of DataFusion Services very simple,
and give us added confidence that when we get on site with each other
everything will work correctly. We could then have a nice listing
like
xmethods.com where developers could see and test everything. I
wonder, however, if everyone will be able/want to do this? I also
believe that with these simple Rest services that we are creating, I
can know everything I need to know about a particular web service with
good documentation. If a sample of the XML returned is provided, I
can use this sample to test with my services. I also strongly feel
that if all used a common tool such as the free Fiddler program to
test our services with, a lot of the surprises that could turn up
will be eliminated.
I feel this is an important topic and encourage everyone to give their
opinions.
