Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly. It would be great if we
could adopt one of your suggested options, and on first sight I don't
have a strong preference for either. I'm copying this message to the
DataCite UK user group, who may have further thoughts on this.
Best wishes,
Tom

Subject: RE: DataCite Metadata - Association Between Identical Datasets
Hi Tom,
Thank you for the question. Under most situations of this pattern, we
would recommend the approach of
RelatedIdentifier
relatedIdentifierType=[select from list]
relationType=[select from list]
but I can see that we do not currently have an option for isDuplicateOf
or isCopyOf.
We are in the process of collecting additional changes for a version 2.3
of the metadata schema, and I think you've given us a compelling new use
case to make an addition to the controlled list of relationType.
May I ask your personal preference for the language between the two
options I listed above?
Thanks,
Joan

Subject: DataCite Metadata - Association Between Identical Datasets
Dear Joan,
I am drafting some guidelines for our users of the DataCite service for
minting DOIs for datasets. I would like to include some guidance for our
users to explain how to deal with duplicate datasets (for example, where
there is a need to deposit identical datasets in multiple locations,
perhaps because of funder requirements).
Our general recommendation is to identify a 'primary' version of the
dataset and assign only that version a DOI. However, where there is an
unavoidable need to publish identical datasets in different locations
each with a separate DOI, I would like to offer a suggestion for how the
metadata for each dataset can indicate the association.
Please could you let me know whether there is a way to indicate this
type of association within the DataCite metadata schema?
Best wishes,
Tom
