Which property for CrossRef Grant IDs?

Hi everyone,

Does the DataCite schema have a property for CrossRef Grant IDs? The definitions of the two closest properties, awardNumber and awardURI, don't seem quite right for it.

Hi Julian, 

The grantID is not yet supported in the metadata schema, but it is already on our working list for a future release. 

However, this will not be until 2021 or 2022.

I work on the Dataverse repository software, which ships with a field for Grant IDs, which is mapped to awardNumber. There's interesting in adding support for letting data depositors enter CrossRef Grant IDs. We're thinking about how to implement this.

Is the working group thinking of adding a new property just for CrossRef Grant IDs, or re-defining the awardNumber property so that it can take things like CrossRef Grant IDs, or maybe making a sub-property, like awardURI, but for CrossRef Grant IDs or things like it like?

My hunch is that it would be great if a data depositor could add, in the same field, either a Grant ID that could be "the code assigned by the funder" or a CrossRef Grant ID. But this could depend on the metadata model that DataCite implements for CrossRef Grant IDs.
