[Chorus:]
When you left
I lost a part of me
It's still so hard to believe
Come back baby please, 'cause
We belong together
Who else am I gonna lean on
When times get rough?
Who's gonna talk to me on the phone
Till the sun comes up?
Who's gonna take your place?
There ain't nobody better
Oh baby, baby
We belong together

I can't sleep at night
When you are on my mind
Bobby Womack's on the radio
Singing to me
'If you think you're lonely now'
Wait a minute
This is too deep, too deep
I gotta change the station
So I turn the dial
Trying to catch a break
And then I hear Babyface
I only think of you
And it's breaking my heart
I'm trying to keep it together
But I'm falling apart
I'm feeling all out of my element
I'm throwing things
Crying
Trying to figure out
Where the hell I went wrong
The pain reflected in this song
Ain't even half of what
I'm feeling inside
I need you
Need you back in my life (in my life, in my life), baby

[Repeat chorus]
When you left
I lost a part of me
It's still so hard to believe
Come back, baby, please, 'cause
We belong together
Who am I gonna lean on
When times get rough?
Who's gonna talk to me
Till the sun comes up?
Who's gonna take your place?
There ain't nobody better.
Oh baby, baby
We belong together

The sound file below is an example of a popular song (some may recognize it but the title isn't important) that uses a very strange chord progression. My arrangement is transposed from the original composition but these chords absolutely work in this song. Yet the chords don't seem to fit properly into any key. I'll take a wild guess and say it's in the key of G.

My question is how can these chords go together? There is an Em and E major? I know the G C D & Em fit in the key of G major. But why does an A major and E major work if this song is in the key of G? What about the B7 (a B major will work in the song also). I realize the bridge might modulate to a different key? But in the verse there is a G and B7 and A and C If I can understand what functions these seemingly out of place chords have and what makes them work in this progression, perhaps I can use the same logic to compose some fresh new melodies for my own original songs.

This could work chromatically. It doesn't really belong to any scale. You play G and by chromatically changing G to G# you go to E. Beatles had a similar progression on the verse of their song 'Honey Don't':

This is how the first four chords can sound good together. They move semitones/tones away, so the chords don't sound that far off, even though they don't belong in the scale per se. It is common to play the III as a major, where it was supposed to be minor. Again, from C to A, you move chromatically by changing C to C#.

Dan Navarro: Eric and I had been in a band together, and it wasn't going well. I had a family business I was helping with in advertising, and my commitment to the band was flagging, so he said, "You've gotta go." And he was my best friend. He kicked me out. We didn't talk for six weeks. He had written four songs in his life, and I'd been one of the main writers in this band ... he calls me one day and says, "Let's get together and write a song, just for the heck of it." I did it, because he was my friend. I tried to put aside my anger and my hurt and in 90 minutes, we write "We Belong." Almost exactly one year later, it was Top 5, all over the world. One of those things that almost never happens.

Except for one thing. I was kind of lamenting an old relationship, and I kind of wanted to get the point across: "It doesn't matter if you agree, or disagree, if you're here or gone. There are things that are bigger than both of us, and we belong together." I started with that final line and built everything almost backwards. Then I thought, "Wouldn't it be fun for us to belong to all of this stuff: the light, the thunder ..." So it came from there.

The original song "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away," for Toy Story 4, earned Randy Newman his 20th Oscar nomination for music. He won two best original song Oscars for Toy Story 3's "We Belong Together" and for "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters, Inc. Newman is also nominated this year for best original score for Marriage Story.

The Elton John biopic, Rocketman, from director Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Edgerton, earned its only Oscar nomination in the category of best original song, with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin. John has one career Oscar for writing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from the original animated Lion King. Taupin and John recently won the Globe Globe for best original song for "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again."

After facing a snub in the best animated feature film category, Frozen II earned an Oscar nomination for its best original song "Into the Unknown," with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The songwriting couple has two previous Oscar wins for "Let It Go" from Frozen and "Remember Me" from Coco.

Following this recording session, "Shake It Off" was briefly selected as the album's lead single, replacing the originally planned "Say Somethin'") Carey returned to Atlanta for a second meeting with Dupri; during this trip, Carey and Dupri penned the last two songs to be included on the album, "We Belong Together" and "It's Like That."

The biographical scenes are intercut with a lot of music; Selena's original recordings are used, with Lopez lip-synching and doing a convincing job of being Selena onstage; she has the star presence to look convincing in front of 100,000 fans in Monterray, Mexico. Some of the songs build real power, but others are undercut, I think, by unnecessary visual gimmicks like Woodstock-style double and triple split screens, and cutaways to the moon, roses, and other symbols. In one montage late in the movie, the same song is shown being performed at several concerts, to showcase the many different costumes Selena designed for herself; the costumes come across, but the performance is lost in the cutting. When Lopez (and Selena) are left alone to simply sing, the results are electrifying.
