DBUG> Check out amazing Hover 3D app
From: David Sargert

Dang!

Very Impressive. A far cry from those guys from Quanta Point at a fraction of the price and a month of waiting for the points to be crunched.

Thanks for this!

Those at the May DBUG meeting saw a jaw-dropping presentation of the Hover 3D app <https://hover.to> by Greg Barriere.

This amazing app/service lets you take pictures of a house or commercial buiding (each elevation and each major corner -- and don't worry about trees, cars or obstructions) with your smartphone or iPad and within about an hour this service will create for you a dynamic 3D model of your building, as well as a set of PDF elevations and 3D views that has been fully dimensioned with windows and doors keynoted, and siding takeoffs provided. I just did my own house yesterday and the results that came back were pretty astounding.

The model can be viewed in a dynamic Object-Viewer like interface on their website (and shared with others), plus you can try out different materials for the faces as well as window/door types.

You will want to know if you can import this model into DataCAD, and the answer is "yes" if you subscribe to one of their per building or monthly subscription plans. (Greg showed use elevations he developed in DataCAD using a DWG model import. It also does SketchUp file imports.) At about $50 per building or per month, you will save tremendously after the first HOUR of your first job developing existing facility plans!

But do take advantage of their free trial, as I did, of one building first (model is free, and just request the PDFs from their chat support). The accuracy of their dimensioning is pretty good. The spot checks I did found an error of only a couple of inches across the whole face of a building. See attached for a couple of snapshots of the model I got and a PDF with measurements.

This app made me wish (for only a moment) that I was writing Cheap Tricks again, so I could share all the details with everyone . . . but this forum post will have to do for now.

Check it out -- you'll be glad you did!

DBUG> Exploding A***Cad file
From: David Haynes
Date: Jun 10

Fellow Debuggers,

I have a client that sends me A***CAD files.  These files have extensive cubicle furniture layouts that I need to explode in order to modify the plans.

I have tried exploding them with 3D menu, and using explode in the Tools menu, neither does the trick.  Both increase the number of entities in the file, and one issue is my cursor is jerky.  DataCAD doesn’t always respond and  boggs down.

Anyone out there know how I can explode these files using DataCAD.  I have been asking an Interior Designer friend to explode them for me using A***CAD, I just feel like I need to find a way to explode these files using DataCAD, where don’t have to keep bothering her to do this  for me.

Thanks,

David

DBUG> DataCAD and .pdf size

I have scanned some energy calculation (T-24 - Calif.) then saved them as pictures and dropped them into DataCAD as bitmaps (the only way I could figure how to do it)
The resulting go-to-view is 47MB.  How in the world do I make this layout (required by the Building Department  as part of the plans submitted) smaller? ls there an easier way to put .pdf sheets into DC?  I have called around but the typical answer I got was (from the State) "we suggest you keep trying to find a way".
Can you even drop in a .pdf document into DC?

Leonard,

You may find that saving the bit maps in a different format (or flavor of a format) helps keep the size down. I’ll try a few, we have the same problem at times.

I think the simplest way to get PDF into DataCad is to take a snapshot of the relevant area and paste special into DataCad.

If you use insert bitmap, the file will depend very much on the type of bitmap. Being calcs, a gif should suffice, while a bmp is probably a joke. Also, putting the pic through PaintShopPro or the like and reducing the colour depth should help.

An A4 catalogue page as a 1.5Mb BMP looks the same as 35k gif and reducing that to 16 colour reduces it to 25k, still looking the same. Note that, when you plot BMPs and GIFs out of DCad to PDF the difference is not as grre4at as the picture formats would suggest.
I have seen at times that DataCad's save as PDF can be pretty inefficient, and plotting to PDFill can make a difference.
