Host: DATACAD and DBUG
It's hard to believe that nearly twenty-two years have passed since an
enthusiastic group of DataCAD users got together and decided to host
monthly
meetings. Please join us for a retrospective look back, informative
presentations, and a preview of DataCAD X3.
AGENDA
* Welcome
Introductions, Announcements, and Anniversary Cake
* Exploring DataCAD 3D
Having more downtime is giving many of you the opportunity to explore
DataCAD's modeling and rendering capabilities. We'll take a few pages
out
of our Advanced Training Guide to provide the insight you need to put
DataCAD's 3D tools to work.
* Break / Group Photo
We will be taking a group photo to mark this special occasion during
the
break.
* DataCAD X3
The next major upgrade to DataCAD will advance 2D automation by
introducing
view and scale-dependent text, dimensions, and symbols. 3D
enhancements
will facilitate the creation of 2D elevations from models. During
this
presentation, we'll show you how X3 will help you get down to details
via
3D.
Economic Recovery Act: If you are not attending Build Boston, you may
be able
use the Plaza Level (upper level) entrance, without an attendee badge,
from
World Trade Center Avenue to access the Mezzanine Level where the
Amphitheater
(probable location of meeting) is located.
*Note: AIA Members can earn 1.5 CEU credits for attending this DBUG
Meeting,

I think we got it years ago with the CD's. I use it for making a block
symbol in plan, however, along the line JdrDash (one I made myself)
got wiggled instead on the old files. Boy, the mask function is a
lifesaver there. There also used to be a LineType maker macro but it's
included in DC12 or something similar.

Subject: Re: DBUG> Re: TRANSFER TO ACAD
The PDF needs to be moved to the proper coordinates for AutoCAD and
traced, like Virginia State Plane 83 etc. to get it right. Of course
if it is for a vicinity map just ignore me. Now if you need to move z
all of this becomes much more tedious in DataCAD. AutoCAD really is
better for survey data, and gears, but not so good for architectural
drawings. I still wish you could enter a point in DataCAD in X, Y, and
Z not just X and Y. It's not easy to get z into points, lines, and
polylines in DataCAD. We'll you do have the 3D line, but survey data
usually comes in as 3D points. It looks like you should be able to
connect the dots. Mostly DataCAD is fixated on creating 3d slabs, and
complicated objects, but where is the simple stuff? For a point x,y,
and z and/or n,e, and z would be sufficient. Why have a z base and z
height for a point. Positive and negative numbers would do there and
most are going to be positive unless you live in the dead sea or
somewhere like that.
Most of the time this doesn't matter as the surveyor takes care of
this and this process goes the other direction. Sometimes on hilly
sites the automatic stuff can do some odd things that need fixing on
the Datacad end. Now, why would I need a z base and z height for a 3d
line or 3d point (that's what survey data is, a bunch of 3d points)?
If I need that, I have a slab or a plane but not a line. A line is the
distance between two points. 3 numbers can describe where those points
are in space.
If you will notice Relative Cartesian and Absolute Cartesian have no
z. If it is for a vicinity map I usually just trace it. If I had z, I
would have the tools to fix problems like that a lot easier.

You've got him. He's yours. You must have known what he was like, you
also
must have known that the US was just the place he needed, and you
still let
him in. You deserve everything you get.
And while you are at it, you can have the plastic Britney back too. I
understand she is down here in God'sown right now and is really on the
nose. There is a British knock-off artist who is actually doing a
better
job than the real (?) thing..... :)

Subject: Re: DBUG> DataCAD on Mac hardware
On a somewhat related note, I thought I'd relay the frustrating
experience I had (and the knowledge gained) updating my Macbook
Bootcamp installation of XP to Service Pack 3. When i attempted to
install the update, it told me I had insufficient free space. So I
deleted some extraneous stuff to get to the 4 GB it said was required.
But it still said there was not enough free space. So I deleted more
stuff, which was actually a good occasion to get rid of temp files,
etc. But still no go. Deleted more to the point where I had way more
than the free space it said I didn't have.
So I (finally) googled the error message and. somewhere down the
google results, saw a post about this problem in Mac dual boot
installs. Turned out I had to make a registry change (something about
how it recognizes the XP boot drive -- I will dig it up if anyone
needs it) and then all was fine. Wasted several hours though.

The
station just slowy gets out of control. The mouse seems to be the
symptom
I notice first. It gradually becomes uncontrolable doing eratic
things you
don't expect. It is somewhere, but not where you think it is when you
click. For a while you can figure out it's quirks, then not so much.
Eventually the system doesn't work at all. finding and fixing a myriad
altered files restores normal function for a while.
Anyway, I am really too tired of this. Lots of dollars and two
tries
thoroughly searching and replacing a lot of altered system files
followed
by a week or less of operation while slowly relapsing into chaos
twice, I'm
out of patience. I know it does not have to be like this because we
have
three Os's running here. I would not have bothered even to try to
patch
this station up except this station runs a huge number of
applications and
upgrading and reinstalling it all when a major OS upgrade comes along
is a
big job with real costs that always turn out to be way outside any
reasonable expectations for time complexity and peripheral hardware
implications.
I have lots of very trouble free linux software running and some zero
trouble apple systems here and I think I am finally going to limit the
stuff we use in Windows to just DataCAD and things that absolutely
must run
with it. That at least will make the restoring wrecked windows
systems
simpler and tolerable. Everything else is going into another OS.
I am curious about trying to run DataCAD in a fresh XP environment in
a VM
bottle on one of our Apple systems, I would like to be able to drag
files
to running aps in both OS environments. and I like Apples 24 inch iMac
screens. So, who is successfully running DataCAD on Apple hardware?
Who
is running it on anything else? I want to try this, and I would
really
like to take advantage of your experience, so I can put together the
right
set up. Hardware and Software.
I promise to post everything about the system once I have made all the
unavoidable mistakes fixed them and it is up and running.
I think it makes sense for me to go for the biggest screen I can
afford.
I'm getting older. I have a 24inch iMac which we like a lot, and I
suppose we could buy a new 27 inch iMac or the big Mac aluminum can
and a
30 inch display, but that seems like it might be over shooting my real
needs if the iMacs will work and can spread the screen across a second
monitor I think that two 24s could be the big screen ticket.
