Windows 7 x64 Hardlock failiure Reply with quote Edit/Delete this post
New install on Win 7 x 64 of Datacad x3. Hardlock failure.
Actions taken.
1. Uninstall Dcad X3.
2. Insert key and reinstall Dcad
3. Failure still occurs when trying to start Dcad.
Actions then taken.
Refer to:
http://www.datacad.com/support/bulletin/HTML/DataCAD_QA.htm
1. With key plugged in, go to "Start" or "Windows" lower left icon, then
Computer > Sytem Properties (top bar) > Device Drivers and scrolll to
bottom and remove any hardlock keys under USB drivers.
2. Unplug the DataCad USB Lock Key.
3. Shut down and reboot.
4. Download the key here
http://www.datacad.com/update/update_hardlock.htm
5. Save to download directory. Then click to run it.
6. It will show "HLDRV32" or "HLDRV32.exe" not "HLVDD.DRV". Since it is
executable, click on it and install. You may have a prompt to over write
a newer file, go ahead and overwrite the driver (Datacad won't load
unless you do this.) Also the driver says it is for "WinXP, Vista and
Vista 64 bit" with no mention of Win 7 or Win 7 x64 which was a bit of
an unknown for me.
7. Then install the USB lock and wait for additional drivers to load
before starting DataCAD x3. The USB drivers that then load on top of the
ones you downloaded are "SafeNet Inc USB Key" and "SafeNet Inc Hardlock
Key". Once these are loaded, start Datacad.

SECOND POST
There's a bit of a problem. Now when I shutdown and reboot with the
Hardlock Key in the USB port, the computer HANGS UP!. I have to hard
shutdown using the button. Then REMOVE the USB KEY, and reboot.
Then I can put in the USB Key and use DataCAD.
SO, I guess for now, the rule is:
LEAVE THE DATACAD USB HARDLOCK KEY out until you have fully booted!!!
THEN plug it in.
I am now wondering if the USB driver should be put into Win XP
compatibility mode or perhaps we need a different driver.
If anyone knows more about this I would appreciated a response with the
details.
Also DataCAD x3 seems to be working in native Windows 7 x64 without
having Windows XP compatibility set to run, Is this correct?
Thanks
Rick

I have no experience of this particular circumstance Rick, the last dongle
may not even be an Aladdin one for all I know but if and it probably is,
Aladdin has Win7-64bit drivers on their site. I have gone and downloaded
that for other applications and smooth uptake followed.

See above. I don't think you would have to do anything, the correct driver
will file itself in the correct area.

For some reason I decided to setup HAL and download the Virtual PC
software.
I realized that there was an x86 folder that some programs loaded into
and that there was
Windows Compatibility mode available out of the box, but it was unclear
to me that that was exactly the same as
the first level of compatibility that I downloaded along with the
Virtual PC mode.
I have not used Virtual PC mode yet and probably wont. So that step was
evidently
not necessary.
I haven't tried setting that driver into windows XP compatibility mode,
but may download
the Aladdin drivers first as you suggested.
I'm still trying to get all our programs going on it right now,
Including transfer of 15 years of contact info to a new Organizer (CR/LF
problems in the
"notes" field are driving me nuts so to speak). Wish there was a good
simple text editior that
showed these ascii control codes in a visable way, with a search and
replace function, so I could
recitify the CSV or tab delimited file, just in the NOTES field.
At any rate, I hope you don't mind if I send this up to dbug as someone
might find it useful (including me).
Best
Rick

Fortunately David and Mark Toce have been up to something and that whatever
worked there is probably better than using the latest Win7 drivers though
they shouldn't hurt, they will either work properly or not, if not can just
be removed.
I did actually load the virtual XP from Microsoft not because it was
necessary but so that I would be ready for any quick operation necessary
...and because I probably like to know what is going on. It is very simply
installed requiring set-up on first use. I leave it turned off rather than
in hibernation in case it holds any of the RAM set for it's use open. Have
only tested with a couple things and found it to work perfectly with those.
Definitely not necessary for CAD stuff in Win7 x64 though and I imagine that
is a good thing as you need to allocate RAM which presumably wouldn't be
available to other applications you use at the same time while operating in
Virtual mode.
It sounds odd that any ongoing application in Win7 would involve differing
return or line feed. Perhaps this is archival stuff which had not been
updated to your more recent use form prior to jumping to Win7.
A vague memory of a similar problem years ago is surfacing though. There
were two or three elements in the possible solution path, I don't remember
which worked. One was to save to another format first then to the required
format. Another was to load an earlier version. If that was Outlook it may
have been a matter of the difference between Outlook and Outlook Express
which they had to have a special translator for as I recall. The third
mechanism which may have been the one used in the particular instance I am
thinking of was to pull it all into Excel and do the finding and replacing
there universally, then outputting to the required format or a format which
could be taken somewhere else and output properly.

On the other issue, Rick. I did wake up remembering last night, the meek
solution I used did involve Excel, the third option listed. I probably
buggered around with the others and more before using that, there must be an
out-of- the-box solutions too though a quick search didn't find one.

Mark Toce helped me with the same problem. Minimun changes. Try his advice
first.
