Dear Friends

It's the time to learn the new and wonderful things. Let's start with R.

R is a programming language from OPEN SOURCE Community. It was developed by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman (Can you see why 'R' seems perfect name for this language :-)

Anything and Everything can be done in R but I shall discuss only the statistical portion of this vast ocean.

It is important to remember that earlier R was CUI (Character User Interface like MS-DOS) but now its partly GUI (Graphic User Interface).

The first video (about downloading and installing this software) is available on https://youtu.be/1mwQvfXrqEY

Happy Learning

Hi All,

Great move by Dr. Neeraj Ji in the beginning of New Year 2018 !!

Appreciable efforts by him always for a good cause in this novel profession to learn and give or provide knowledge :) Keep it up !!

Please refer some links outlined here in reference to learn R tool effectively, rest would be covered by Dr. Neeraj Ji in the times to come as per his convenience.

https://www.rstudio.com/online-learning/#R
https://www.tutorialspoint.com/r/
https://www.computerworld.com/article/2497143/business-intelligence/business-intelligence-beginner-s-guide-to-r-introduction.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjuXiBjxryQ

While getting his mail, now my past memories are refreshed as I have been trained and specialized of R tool training at Tel Aviv Univ (TAU), Israel (Recanati Business School) - one of the top rated university/business school in the world (ranked among 20 every year in World's ranking by accreditation agencies). I'm humbled to be associated with such great universities, people and worked with scholars of management and psychology as well. One should visit this university, if time permit in some formal tie-ups with them in research and other engagement in this year or later.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience learning R there and played with data.

Being an open source, R tool has greater advantages using by scholars, academicians, statisticians and faculties in solving their research problems significantly. See some advantages below that how R and Rattle can help us.

Why R and Rattle ?

R and Rattle are free software in terms of allowing anyone the freedom to do as they wish with them. This is also referred to as open source software to distinguish it from closed source software, which does not provide the source code. Closed source software usually has quite restrictive licenses associated with it, aimed at limiting our freedom using it. This is separate from the issue of whether the software can be obtained for free (which is often, but not necessarily, the case for open source software) or must be purchased. R and Rattle can be obtained for free.

This is a common misunderstanding about the concept of free and open source software. R, being free and open source software, is in fact a peer reviewed software product that a number of the worlds top statisticians have developed and others have reviewed. In fact, anyone is permitted to review the R source code. Over the years, many bugs and issues have been identified and rectified by a large community of developers and users.

Moving back to R specially, many have identified the pros and cons of using this statistical software package. We list some of the advantages with using R:

1. R is the most comprehensive statistical analysis package available. It incorporates all of the standard statistical tests, models, and analyses, as well as providing a comprehensive language for managing and manipulating data. New technology and ideas often appear first in R.

2. R is a programming language and environment developed for statistical analysis by practicing statisticians and researchers. It reflects well on a very competent community of computational statisticians.
ˆ
3. R is now maintained by a core team of some 19 developers, including some very senior statisticians. The graphical capabilities of R are outstanding, providing a fully programmable graphics language that surpasses most other statistical and graphical packages.
ˆ
4. The validity of the R software is ensured through openly validated and comprehensive governance as documented for the US Food and Drug Administration (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, 2008). Because R is open source, unlike closed source software, it has been reviewed by many internationally renowned statisticians and computational scientists.
ˆ
5. R is free and open source software, allowing anyone to use and, importantly, to modify it. R is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with copyright held by The R Foundation for Statistical Computing.
ˆ
6. R has no license restrictions (other than ensuring our freedom to use it at our own discretion), and so we can run it anywhere and at any time, and even sell it under the conditions of the license.

7. Anyone is welcome to provide bug fixes, code enhancements and new packages and the wealth of quality packages available for R is a testament to this approach to software development and sharing.

8. ˆR has over 4800 packages available from multiple repositories specializing in topics like econometric, data mining, spatial analysis and bio-informatics.
ˆ
9. R is cross-platform. R runs on many operating systems and different hardware. It is popularly used on GNU/Linux, Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows, running on both 32 and 64 bit processors.

ˆ10. R plays well with many other tools, importing data, for example, from CSV files, SAS, and SPSS, or directly from Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Oracle, MySQL, and SQLite. It can also produce graphics output in PDF, JPG, PNG, and SVG formats, and table output for LATEX and HTML.

Whilst the advantages might flow from the pen with a great deal of enthusiasm, it is useful to note some of the disadvantages or weaknesses of R, even if they are perhaps transitory!
ˆ
1. R has a steep learning curve|it does take a while to get used to the power of R-but no steeper than for other statistical languages.
ˆ
2. R is not so easy to use for the novice. There are several simple-to-use graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for R that encompass point-and-click interactions, but they generally do not have the polish of the commercial offerings.
ˆ
3. Documentation is sometimes patchy and terse, and impenetrable to the non-statistician. However, some very high-standard books are increasingly plugging the documentation gaps.
ˆ
4. The quality of some packages is less than perfect, although if a package is useful to many people, it will quickly evolve into a very robust product through collaborative efforts.

5. There is, in general, no one to complain to if something doesn't work. R is a software application that many people freely devote their own time to developing. Problems are usually dealt with quickly on the open mailing lists, and bugs disappear with lightning speed. Users who do require it can purchase support from a number of vendors internationally.
ˆ
6. Many R commands give little thought to memory management and so R can very quickly consume all available memory. This can be a restriction when doing data mining. There are various solutions including using 64 bit operating systems that can access much more memory than 32 bit ones.

Have a nice time and great research year ahead with wonderful achievements in your life using latest tools and techniques.

PS: Happy learning, researching with confidence and smile. In case things does not work, don't be panic. Life is not ending here rather its a great start and look forward always, help others through sharing knowledge in events like FDPs, MDPs, Workshops, Seminars !!

With best regards.

My paper in IIM Bangalore in International conference on Business Analytics and Intelligence was selected only because you provided the SEM knowledge through Video.
at IIMB I learned that R & Python are very much needed for Business Analytics, which is the future of the business.
Now we will be more resourceful!!
Thanks a lot to teach us R.

R/Sunita Mam
R is very easy and interesting. I was watching some videos on R and found that people use R for Financial Econometrics as well as Panel Data Regression. Whatever we can do in other software, we can do it in R with much ease and accuracy of results.

@Vinay:
Thanks for the kind words Vinay. I'm sharing whatever I've got from my teachers. I had the rare privilege of meeting with and learning from the best teachers and human beings.
I'm learning R from Marin: https://goo.gl/sFBML7 and he's an excellent teacher.
I'm trying to even simply the concepts in the light of the requirements of scholars of Management and commerce.

@Asha Mam:
Together we've to learn a lot and serve humanity by sharing this knowledge.

I hope you're able to connect to the R-Studio. Now that we've completed the Bi-variate Analysis, before going ahead with the Multi-variate Analysis, let's pass through the colorful world of charts in R-Studio.

From today I'm starting Charts in R-Studio.

R-Studio provides numerous charts, so I've tried to classify them on the basis of One or Two variables as well as their measurement. For this, I made a powerpoint presentation (Attached). Next 8 videos are of the 8 type of charts.

Starting with Uni-variate charts (Non-metric measurement):

Dear Friends

While reviewing the R-playlist, I found many gaps in between. So I tried to fill in those gaps by some additional videos.

Starting again with the Basics of R and packages:
R-Studio Part-2.2 Basics of R (Packages, Function and Variables)https://youtu.be/jXpp6YnyVq8

Plz feel free to ask for the problems you're encountering in installation, packages or anything else.

Dear Friends

I hope you're enjoying the journey of R as much as I'm enjoying.

So far we've covered the 3 phases in R:
1. Installation of R and R-Studio, the concept of Packages, Functions, Variables.
2. Uni-variate and Bi-variate Analysis
3. Charts in R

Now we can start our journey in the world of Multi-variate Analysis (Though I've already discussed some parts of it in Multiple Regression (Part-9.2), LDA (Part-10), Logistics Regression (Part-11) and Stepwise Method of Regression (Part-9.4), but now we can start in an official manner).

The first one, to start, is Factor Analysis. One R-Studio Part-21 Cronbach Alpha: https://youtu.be/5_lLj2b1Xas is already Public.  The next 2 videos shd be seen together.

R-Studio Part-22 EFA Assumptions  KMO and Bartlett's testhttps://youtu.be/Qf0Jp5NLYGA

R-Studio Part-23 EFA  (Principal Component Analysis): https://youtu.be/0KokmKuXsSs

Dear Friends

"psych" package in R is a wonderful package which contains functions which are used in  Procedures for Psychological, Psychometric, and Personality (Read details on https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/psych/psych.pdf)

This package provides functions for Cronbach Alpha, EFA, CFA etc. I recently found function cor.ci which table of Correlation Coefficients with color coding.

I've explained it on https://youtu.be/pFeaRceu_ps

Hope you'll find it useful and interesting.

Dear Friends

While reviewing the R-Studio playlist, surprisingly I found that I've not discussed the concept of One-way ANOVA, Two-way ANOVA or the Non-parametric tests. After completing t-tests, I directly moved to Correlation and Regression and forget to touch these concepts.

Anyway, I've filled in the gaps and these three videos are explained on following links:

R-Studio Part 7.4 One way ANOVAhttps://youtu.be/61lPRa-AxxM

R-Studio Part 7.5 Two way ANOVAhttps://youtu.be/p9UG6A2-SW8

Dear Friends
It's been a long time that we're discussing the various features of R.
But one analysis everyone is so eager to know is whether we can do SEM in R?
Particularly, CFA and higher effects like Mediation and moderation.
So, the answer is Yes.
There are many wonderful packages like lavaan, mediation, semPlot etc
Today, I've explained CFA in R using lavaan package: https://youtu.be/kf0yOJr3wtk
Hope you'll find it useful.

Great efforts sir and best contributions to students and research across disciplines.

I request you again now please help us students of engineering and medical research, application of statistics in experiment and medical designs specially repeated measures, doubly repeated measures, like how we can check post hoc analysis if we have only two conditions with two levels

I request you to please help us with adding your videos in experiment design playlist.

Plots Function in R is used along with many other functions like points, axis, text, legend, abline etc.
I made Part 19.1 and then skipped its many other additional functions with the view to cover it lately.

Now I've completed this by making 2 videos on points and axis:

R-Studio Part-19.2: Adding points to Plot: https://youtu.be/q7L3TCGcdug
R-Studio Part-19.3: Axis option on Plot: https://youtu.be/QXepTDxQiFw

Bonus: To access History from the keyboard, just press Ctrl+shift+Upward arrow and you can get back to any previously written command.

I noticed many gaps in the videos and trying to fill in the same.
One related to Regression in R-Studio is to get the values of Standardized Beta, VIF, Partial Correlation in Regression, Durbin Watson value, Confidence Limits etc. I tried to fill in this gap using the packages jtools, lmtest and lm.beta

Dear Friends

As we move on the journey of R, a very helpful and potent tool is the Script
It enables us to do high volume work in just a few steps.

I explained it in the following 2 videos:

Good Afternoon Sir,

Thanks for sharing the videos. The Script is indeed powerful to use in the analysis of the data. Few questions for you Sir:

1.Can one use it for large number of variables? Is there any restriction on it?
2. Can I use it for large data also ?
3. Can I use the plot function for multiple variables?

Dear Mam
Plz note whatever we can do by typing commands in R, the same can be saved in Script files and be used again and again.
Here're my inputs to your query:
1. There is no upper limit of no. of variables in the script. You may use it for any number of variables.
2. It is actually used with very large files (in terms of number of observations and number of variables)
3. If you know working on the plot with many variables, the same command can be saved in the script and run.
4. There are many arguments in a function which may help you in generating variable wise colors. You may refer https://www.r-bloggers.com/ for all your queries related to R.
5. This query is not related to R but to the writing the interpretation. As regard writing results, every scholar shd refer to the journals of his/her area or the excellent book of SPSS for Introductory Statistics: Use and Interpretation by Nancy Leech. This book is specifically written for this purpose only.

Dear Friends

We started the journey of R on Jan 1st and today, on the last day of 2018, let's learn how to export output of R directly to MS-Word file. I explained it in
R-Studio Part-29 Sending R-Studio Output to MS Word filehttps://youtu.be/tXuoYFd_IIU

This was a yeaR full of R. I made number and number of videos on R-Studio, R-Commander, took many workshops in various universities. I hope we'll maintain this tempo in 2019 too.

So far, I've discussed about the Quantitative aspect of Data Analysis. In 2019, we'll focus on the Qualitative aspect like Text Analytics using R (But that will be done in a separate playlist as well as separate post)

In the meanwhile, I'm filling in the missing links of all playlists too.

Happy Learning

Respected Sir,
I just randomly clicked on your cluster analysis playlist (I sometimes randomly watch something useful to brush up my skills) and realized that you made videos using r commander while in r or r studio, you were getting different results.
I just want to share that this problem can be fixed by using set.seed() function in r before running the algorithm.

Actually any algorithm, which use random numbers (in r) produce different results every time we run it so in order to make results reproducible, we use this function with a fixed number before running the actual algorithm e.g., set.seed(5)
Code....

I hope it’s useful.
Thanks & Regards,

Dr Nisha Arora

Thanks Nisha Mam for such great help.
I feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends.

These days I'm exploring CFA and SEM in R-Studio.
I've noted that while in other softwares, the steps are so complicated, in R-Studio the same can be done in just 3 steps.

At the core of the lavaan package is the difference between 4 symbols:
  • ~ (Used for Regression expression)
  • ~~  (Used for Correlation expression)
  • =~  (Used for defining a construct)
  • :=  (Used for terms of calculations)
I've explained the concepts of CFA, estimating correlation among Constructs and Mediation in these 2 videos:

Respected Sir,

I need to thank you for uploading awesome videos on the fundamentals of marketing. I really appreciate it Sir.

I need to learn about the graphical representations of the Psychographics. They are in demand Sir.
I wanted to share one more thing. Apart from the categories of mapping as given from your end, it is also called heat mapping. This is exclusively used in Twitter analysis.
I would like to see other kinds of matrices also apart from 2*2 matrix. These videos are useful for my own marketing analysis. Thanks for sharing them. These charts and maps are useful in the complicated marketing analysis.
In this video, the focus is on classical multiple dimensional scaling. It means that there are more varieties of MDS. Can you please share the names of other varieties also Sir?
Can I use a different color for each plotting of the respondents(before transposing)?
Is it possible to use different colors for each actor?
One more thing I wanted to question you Sir. You got the excel sheet with you and it even consists of the comments of each respondent. Now come to the part wherein you uploaded the respondents (i.e. before transposing step in the video). Can I link the comment of the respondent with the point in the graph? In other words, the moment I click or bring the mouse to hover above the point depicting a respondent, can I see their comment also?I need to know this method Sir. It is possible because I did observe it in the dynamic heat maps or the perceived mappings. I need to learn this from you through R.

Gud noon friends

We all find Excel so handy and quick in data handling, but doing the same tasks in R-Studio seems quite painful.
So, here comes Dr Hadley Wickham (http://hadley.nz/) who have made numerous packages for the efficient working in R-Studio.

One of the greats gift from him is dplyr- A r-package for Data Handling (just like Excel)
While watching YouTube videos, on any concept using R-Studio, you'll find the functions of this packages are used so frequently particularly the Pipe Operator %>%

I've explained 12 features of this package in this long video (25 min duration):

Dear Sir,
Packages like dplyr, tidyr, datatable, makes data wrangling super easy and fast in R.
Personally, I am also a fan of chaining operator and attach() function (from base package).
Same with ggplot2 (again by same author)and plotly for creating awesome plots using grammer of graphics.
A bunch of packages including these is known as tidyverse which makes analysts life easy.
Even Python users prefer R for data wrangling and Visualization.
