Dear Pooja
Reliability is nothing but the correlation coefficient of all the statements taken together.
Remember correlation coefficient (r) is always computed between the 2 var.
But here we want to find correlation between various statements hence we put its name as Alpha (Cronbach alpha).
Now lets see what exactly it means?
Mr X worked on a topic and found that some of the statements are rated by respondents as almost same i.e. highly correlated.
So he claims that whenever anyone will use that scale almost same sort of results will be obtained. Actually this is what is called as Empirical study.
Now Ms Y works on the same scale and get it filled by some respondents. Now she'll find cronbach alpha. If her results are ok then she's validating the results else either there's some problems with the respondents or may be as per the context the scale need to be modified.
Best wishes
