Purpose of Marker Variables in Research

Good afternoon.... Respected Dr Neeraj Sir and group members

My question is that every type of variable (lets say -- IV, DV, Control variable, Mediating Variable, Moderating variable etc)  have their specific purpose in any research.  Could you please explain the purpose of "Marker Variable" in research.
