There are various ways for determining the appropriate sample size.
It depends upon number of factors:
1. Population type ------- Infinite population or finite population
2. Type of scale --- 5 point Likert scale or 7 point likert scale
3 Alpha level (5%) for social sciences
4. Acceptable margin of error which is 5% for categorical data and 3%
for continuous data;
Now there can be 4 possible cases that actually will decide the
appropriate sample size
1. Infinite population (Continuous Data) ---- 5 point Likert scale or
7 point likert scale
For this case for 5 point Likert scale minimum sample size is 2964
2 Infinite population (Categorical Data)
For this case the minimum sample size is 384
3.Finite population (Continuous Data) ---- 5 point Likert scale or 7
point likert scale
For this case (say n= 10,000) for 5 point Likert scale minimum sample
size is 2945
4.Finite population (Categorical Data)
For this case the minimum sample size is 370
