Guidance Needed - Translating Study Questionnaire to Hindi

Dear Neeraj Sir and Group Members,

We are conducting a study in which we need to translate our questionnaire into Hindi. We plan to do it through an online translator; however, I am not very sure if this is an appropriate and standard way of doing it. I came across multiple papers (one of which I am sharing in this post) that state that it should be translated by a professional only. Would appreciate it if details of some professional translators could be shared. Kindly guide me on the best approach.

Feel free to contact me for any guidance or help in this regard.

Another way is to get it done by an expert and also have it cross checked by another to double check the fact that the translated is conveying the same meaning as it was in english.

Dear Maam,

Thank you for your prompt response and valuable suggestions regarding the translation of our questionnaire into Hindi.

I appreciate the information about the Anuvadini tool of AICTE and the recommendation to use an online document translation tool. However,  I am currently facing a dilemma regarding the acceptability of using online translators in research publications. While planning to translate our questionnaire into Hindi, I am uncertain if relying on online tools meets the required standards. Will appreciate your input in this regard.

Dear Garima,

Online translation is not a problem. The problem is machine translation, which, at the time of this writing, is not very accurate. Online translation service using human translator is alright. Make sure that you supply sufficient information about your subject — so that the provider can do translation accurately.

This is by the government 

And I said that once done it is a good idea to have it cross checked by a Hindi professor who is familiar with this and then back from someone in social science who is an expert in such studies 

That should suffice your claim 

Mentioning that you used the anuvadini tool would be helpful

No software is fool proof as such

The target audience can be used for a pilot study to validate the translation work did who are equally familiar with English and Hindi both
