Respected sir and group members,

I am proposing a model with 2 IVs, 2 mediators, and 1 DV. (Please find the attached image). We are also proposing serial mediation.

1. For reporting, I am referring to a research paper with serial mediation that has used the Hayes approach for mediation using smart pls. I am unable to understand what values are being reported for the relationship between IV and DV (direct or total) under table 4: path coefficients and significances.

2. After referring to the book suggested by Neeraj sir 'Introduction to mediation, moderation, and conditional process analysis' by A.F. Hayes, I still have confusion regarding the difference between Baron and Kenny's approach and Hayes's approach to mediation and how will it be reported using smart-pls.

This is what I have understood: In Hayes's approach, the initial relationship between IV and DV before introducing the mediator need not be significant as opposed to Baron and Kenny's approach. Please correct me if I am wrong.

3. In a youtube video, said that the total effect after bootstrapping is actually the direct effect without mediator.

Please kindly suggest corrections if possible.

Dear Maneesha

Here are my inputs:

1. Hayes Process Macro is used mainly for the complex models which other software can't handle like mediated moderation. Serial Mediation can be comfortably handled by SmartPLS.

2. Prof Hayes has written in detail about the statistical flaws of the Baron & Kenny Approach.
So, don't use that. Instead, use the results given by SmartPLS software.
I've discussed the flowchart (3 step process) for the mediation approach in this video:

3. Total Effect = Direct effect + Indirect effect of X on Y through M
In Mediation analysis, we don't need the total effect.

Best wishes

Protocols of this Group:

1. Plz search previous post in group before posing the question.
2. Don't write query in someone's post. Always use the option of New topic for the new question. You can do this by writing to dataanalys...@googlegroups.com
3. Its better to give a proper subject to your post/query. It'll help others while searching.
4. Never write Open ended queries. This group intend to help research scholars NOT FOR WORK THEM.
5. Never write words like URGENT in ur posts. People will help them when they are free.
6. Never upload any info about National Seminars/Conferences. Send such info on personal emails. And feel free to share any RESEARCH related info.
7. No Happy New Year, Happy Diwali, Happy Holi, Happy B'day, Happy Anniversary etc. allowed on this group.
8. Few months back there was a facility for asking & sharing the Research Papers. Now there is no provision of asking for the research paper here.

Let’s make a better research environment.

Thank you for your reply sir,

1. Sir, I am using smart pls for testing the whole model. Sir, how do we determine which mediator has caused full mediation since the indirect effect through both mediators as well as with serial mediation are significant. Is there a need to report the model by introducing one mediator at a time?

2. Thank you for the link to the video sir. I have taken help from the video as well. Sir in case of serial mediation, we will have to multiply all 4 relations to arrive at complementary or competitive partial mediation?

Thanks and regards

1. Specific Indirect Effect is meant for this thing only.
It will give you an analysis of all possible mediations, whether there is one mediator or a serial mediator
2. Yes
