Dear Madam,
If it is a empirical study, the sample size would depend on the number of variables/constructs/factors you are going to take in your analysis.
The rule of thumb suggests that
sample size = (total number of statements/items in your study) * 5
for obtaining a better sample adequacy.

Protocols of this Group:

1. Plz search previous post in group before posing the question.
2. Don't write query in someone's post. Always use the option of New topic for the new question. You can do this by writing to dataanalys...@googlegroups.com
3. Its better to give a proper subject to your post/query. It'll help others while searching.
4. Never write Open ended queries. This group intend to help research scholars NOT FOR WORK THEM.
5. Never write words like URGENT in ur posts. People will help them when they are free.
6. Never upload any info about National Seminars/Conferences. Send such info on personal emails. And feel free to share any RESEARCH related info.
7. No Happy New Year, Happy Diwali, Happy Holi, Happy B'day, Happy Anniversary etc. allowed on this group.
8. Few months back there was a facility for asking & sharing the Research Papers. Now there is no provision of asking for the research paper here.

Let’s make a better research environment.

Otherwise, for management Research, involving primary data, a large sample, usually 1000 or more is suggested by leading management departments of india.

There are various ways for determining the appropriate sample size.
It depends upon number of factors:
1. Population type ------- Infinite population or finite population
2. Type of scale --- 5 point Likert scale or 7 point likert scale
3 Alpha level (5%) for social sciences
4. Acceptable margin of error which is 5% for categorical data and 3% for continuous data;

Now there can be 4 possible cases that actually will decide the appropriate sample size
1. Infinite population (Continuous Data) ---- 5 point Likert scale or 7 point likert scale
For this case for 5 point Likert scale minimum sample size is 2964

2 Infinite population (Categorical Data)
For this case the minimum sample size is 384

3.Finite population (Continuous Data) ---- 5 point Likert scale or 7 point likert scale
For this case (say n= 10,000) for 5 point Likert scale minimum sample size is 2945

4.Finite population (Categorical Data)
For this case the minimum sample size is 370

Dear Nikisha
Mir has explained the concepts beautifully.
Determining the sample size is the 6th step in the process of sample design.
