Dear Friends

From some time I am reading Meta-Analysis and I must say it is a complete world in its own.
It operates at min 2 levels: Basics and Advanced Level

Basic Level includes the following:
  • Summary Effect
  • Fixed and Random Effect
  • Identifying and Measuring Heterogeneity
  • Sub-Group Analysis
  • Meta-regression
  • Reporting & Publications Bias
  • Fail-Safe Analysis
  • Trim and Fill Analysis
Advances concepts include
  • Meta-SEM
Software used:
Study Material:
I attempted to explain the Level-1 concept in simple terms in a new playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzUJUtTJcj8TjSgv9Nk9HJt92s1uxeRWz)

The first video discusses the Study Material and Basic Concept

Meta-Analysis is applied on the relation of any 2 or more vars e.g. if you have a model (containing many vars) then focus on every relation in it. So, Meta-Analysis can be applied on the relation between 2 vars or on the entire model too.

So, before we formally start Meta-Analysis, let us revisit the concepts that one shd be aware of.

Dear Uma Mam
In Meta-Analysis, we provide a conclusion of all studies up to a particular point of time, we must include results of studies that are not published. Hence we shd incorporate studies published in conferences, unpublished dissertation & thesis, even papers that were rejected. For this, it is advisable to contact the various scholars working in that area and ask them about their rejected paper. I shall discuss these concepts soon in the concept of Publication bias.

Dear Sir,

Homogeneity analyses were conducted using the chi-square statistic (Hunter et al., 1982) to determine whether variation among the correlations was greater than by chance.( Refrence: Role of self identity in TPB paper)

What i have learned about homogeneity in Meta analysis is that if you have selected the targeted relationship from same domain and variation in effect size due to sampling error. Here, they are talking about another aspect of homogeneity ( variation in r )?

Further in paper, they talked about input matrix in multiple regression to determine the increment variation due to self identity after controlling TPB component
using hierarchical regression. My query is related to process that how to consider comprehensive result of all studies for self identity in hiearchical regression.

Dear Friends

So, let's have a Moderation day Today.

Moderator is of 2 types: Metric and Non-Metric.

Metric Moderator is called as the Interaction effect while  Non-Metric Moderator is called as the Multi-Group Analysis.

In Meta-Analysis too, the same prevails.
When we are trying to check whether a relation (r) is same in 2 or more groups, it is called as the Sub-Group Meta-Analysis and when we check whether it (r) is affected by any metric var, it is called as Meta-Regression.

I've explained these in the following videos:

Dear Friends

I hope you enjoyed the Meta-Analysis videos so far and now ready to go to the next level.

The next level Bias & Error Correction was developed by Frank Schmidt and Hunter in late 1975 but they published it in 1977 with the term Validity Generalization. Before that Gene Glass has coined the term Meta-Analysis.

Error and Bias Correction provides an in-depth analysis of how we work, measure constructs and the pitfalls there.
It is less of mathematical and more of conceptual work.

I've explained the Historical Development of Schmidt-Hunter method in this video:

Dear Friends

Scmidth & Hunter (2014) described 11 artifacts which shd be corrected for the Bias. An Artifact may be defined as the Errors in study results produced by Study Imperfections or Manmade errors ad not properties of nature.
The 11 artifacts are as under:
  1. Sampling error
  2. Error of measurement in the DV
  3. Error of measurement in the IDV
  4. Dichotomization of a continuous DV
  5. Dichotomization of a continuous IDV
  6. Range variation in the IDV
  7. Range variation in the DV
  8. Deviation from perfect construct validity in the IDV
  9. Deviation from perfect construct validity in the DV
  10. Reporting or Transcriptional error
  11. Variance due to extraneous factors that affect the relationship
Two of these namely Sampling Error and Measurement Error are the most important as they are always present in the study and we shall correct them for Meta-SEM.

I've explained these artifacts in this video:

For starting the Meta-SEM, first, we have to collect papers from SLR and then extract the data in a particular format.
We've to prepare 2 tables: One for the Correlation and second for the mean, std dev and Alpha
Then we can use the correction formula.

I've explained the formats in this video.

For running Meta-SEM we need correlation.
Ideally, we need r but we can estimate r from r2, beta of simple regression too.
I've not covered the topics of converting other statistics to r.

So far we have discussed the formats of data collection from papers, data entry in Excel, SPSS and attaching that file to AMOS. Now we can start working on Meta-SEM in AMOS.

Dear Friends

We've concluded the Meta-SEM and its working in SPSS+AMOS.

It is pertinent to mention here that so far I've only discussed the concepts directly related to correlation coefficient. There may also be cases where any of the statistical indicators are first changed to the correlation coefficient and then performed Meta-Analysis.

I've discusses one more Case Study Anticipated regret as an additional predictor in the theory of planned behaviour: A meta-analysis by Tracy Sandberg and Mark Conner; published in British Journal of Social Psychology (2008), 47, 589–606

Dear Friends

I've made a detailed playlist on Meta-Analysis and Meta-SEM.
However, this playlist is largely focused on correlation values only.

In recent days, I got messages from various scholars working in different fields like Medicines, Agriculture, Computers etc. There, in most of their review papers, they get the values of crosstabulation, t-test, anova etc.
So, the question is how to proceed further?

The answer is that we can convert all effect sizes to other effect sizes. For this, we need to use the different Meta Essential Excel formats.

Plz note that the Meta Essential Excel files will give certain output.

Type of Data Tool/technique Meta Essential File Statistics generated
Both vars Binary Crosstabulation 2 Meta-Essentials Differences between independent groups - binary data 1.5 Odd's ratio
1 var Continuous,
1 var categorical
t-test, anova 3 Meta-Essentials Differences between independent groups - continuous data 1.5 Hedge's g
Both vars Continuous correlation 5 Meta-Essentials Correlational data 1.5 r
Expt Study paired t-test 4 Meta-Essentials Differences between dependent groups - continuous data 1.5 Hedge's g

It is interesting to note that Cohen's d is at the center of all such conversions e.g.

Conversion from t-test to r:
  • Meta essential Excel File will give Hedge's g from t-test values
  • This Hedge's g which will be converted to d and
  • this d will be converted to r
Conversion of cross tabulation values to r
  • Meta essential Excel File will give Odd's ratio from the given Freq data of Crosstabulation
  • This Odd's ratio will be converted to Log Odd's ratio and
  • This Log Odd's ratio will be converted to d
  • This d will be converted to r
I've explained all these concepts in this video: https://youtu.be/japjv1jrWSg

Dear Friends

While working on Meta-Analysis, we seek the correlation (between the given 2 variables) in the research papers.
Most scholars search for the correlation matrix but there are other forms of correlation (file attached) that we sh be aware of.
I've tried to explain it in this video:

Dear Friends

Meta-SEM is a three step process:

1. Perform Meta-Analysis for every pair in the given model.
2. Collect mean, std dev and alpha for every construct. Correct r using alpha.
COMPUTE COMBINED MEAN AND COMBINED STANDARD DEVIATION (Explained in this video).
3. Perform Meta-SEM in AMOS or R-studio.

Dear Friends,

We often encounter the challenge of not finding correlation coefficients (r) in every paper. For example, if a study uses crosstabulation and a chi-square test, or logistic regression, the correlation coefficient will not be reported.

In such cases, it is necessary to convert various statistics into effect sizes. I explained this process in the video: Meta-Analysis-22.1 Conversion among Effect Sizes

To explore this further, let's look at a case involving crosstabulation and revise the concepts. I have detailed this in the following video:

Meta-Analysis-22.2 Converting Odds Ratio to r: https://youtu.be/Qe89H7SVQEo

Happy learning,
Neeraj
