Process to create an Index

Hello

Good morning all. Need one help.
Is there any videos, write ups to understand the construction of an index.

Context: for example I have a set of banks, and a financial measure (say profits), I want to construct an index and say that if a bank has profits below the index value it is bad bank and above the index value it is a good bank.

An Index always means many dimensions with their relative weights.
