Dear Friends
Are you curious about how indices like the
Human Development Index or
NIRF are built? Do you want to understand the methodology behind these powerful indicators?
Join me for a free online session on the "Construction of an Index." This session will demystify the process, covering key concepts such as:
- What is an index and why is it important?
- The methodology for selecting and weighting various constituents.
- How constituents are measured and the scoring nuances
- Hands on session on construction of an index, data collection and evaluation using Index
We will also explore the often-confused distinction between an index and a scale, a crucial concept in composite measurement. While both are used to measure complex concepts, they differ in their construction and underlying assumptions.
Index vs. Scale:
Index: An index is created by combining multiple indicators into a single score. The indicators are often considered to be "causes" of the concept being measured, and they are usually given equal weight. For example, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in India is a widely recognized index that combines various parameters like Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR) to rank educational institutions. The overall NIRF score is a composite of these different, and not necessarily correlated, factors.
Scale: A scale, on the other hand, is designed to capture the intensity or level of a particular attitude, belief, or behavior. The items in a scale are carefully selected to reflect different levels of the underlying concept, and they are expected to be empirically related. A classic example is a Likert scale, which asks respondents to rate their agreement with a statement on a range from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree." The responses are then combined to measure the intensity of a person's attitude toward a specific topic.
