Respected Professors and Colleagues,
Greetings.
I am pleased to share our recently published article, written by Prof. Justin Paul and me, titled “Research Methods in a Nutshell: What, Why, When, Where, Who, and How?”, published in the International Journal of Consumer Studies.
This article is a practical and accessible methodological guide for academicians, doctoral scholars, early-career researchers, supervisors, reviewers, and editors. It addresses a common challenge in academic research: selecting and justifying the most appropriate method for a given research problem. Using the 5WH framework, the article offers a clear comparative logic for understanding what each method is, why and when it should be used, where it can be applied, who or what the unit of analysis may be, and how it can be executed with methodological care.
The article covers a wide range of methodological approaches, including regression-based methods, experimental designs, multivariate methods such as SEM, PLS-SEM and NCA, qualitative methods, mixed methods, configurational and comparative methods such as fsQCA and GQCA, big data and computational methods, AI-driven techniques, and literature review methods. It also discusses common misuses, adequacy thresholds, and practical guidelines for authors.
We believe this article may be useful for senior academicians in mentoring scholars, guiding doctoral work, strengthening research design courses, reviewing manuscripts, and helping researchers improve the alignment between their research questions and methodological choices. It may also serve as a useful reading for PhD scholars, early-career faculty members, and research methodology workshops.
We would be grateful if you could kindly share it with your scholars, colleagues, and wider academic community, wherever you feel it may be useful.
We hope you enjoy reading the article and find it helpful in your academic and research engagements. We would also be happy to contribute to any relevant academic engagement, such as doctoral workshops, research methodology sessions, faculty development programmes, seminars, or invited discussions, if required.
We would also be thankful if you consider citing it in relevant research, teaching, supervision, or methodological discussions.
