Respected Sir and Group Members

there r certain queries related to values in rotated component matrix...

1. Is it fine to get say 12 factors in Rotated Component Matrix with none of the items/statements under one or more factors. Should we in that case consider rest of the factors or some sort treatment is needed.

2. in case an item falls under 2 or more factors, should we consider it under the one with highest value.??

3. in case there are one or two statements that come under a factor in rotated component matrix, but logically we find that those two can be included in some other factor, should we merge them or what else can be done in such a case.??

Respected Sir and group members...

kindly help with the queries mentioned in my last post.. first two are solved... but I am still stuck with the 3rd one..

i.e., in case there are one or two statements that come under a factor in rotated component matrix, but logically we find that those two should be included in some other factor, should we merge them or what else can be done in such a case.??

Dear Iesha
Here are my inputs:
1. In Rotated Component matrix, it is never the case that a statement does not fall under any of the factors.
Plz check again. You must have suppressed the factor loading below a particular number (like 0.4). If you do not do that, then the factor loading of this statement with all factors will be shown.
So, your question now becomes:
If the factor loading of a statement is <0.4 for all factors, shd you remove it?
Yes, you shd run EFA once again and remove this statement from the analysis.

2. If a statement is highly loaded (>0.4) in 2 factors, then this statement shd be retained or not?
There are 4 schools of thoughts:
(i) Keep the statement in that factor where factor loading is high
(ii) Keep the statement in factor where it makes more sense
(iii) Keep the statement in both factors as in both factors factor loading is high
(iv) Remove the statement

In EFA, scholars use any of the 4 methods but in CFA only the 4th is used i.e. the statement is removed.

3. The 3rd question is very controversial.
My take is that if the respondent has provided a high relation between the 2 statements, who're you to remove those statements or tell that it's not possible.

Plz remember, you've not done anything in the analysis. You asked for the responses, put them in SPSS, run EFA which clubbed highly correlated statements into a factor. After doing all this, how can you say this is wrong?

What is your opinion Who's more important in Research: You or Respondent?
If the respondent is important, then respect their response and try to see why there shd be a relation between seemingly uncorrelated statements?

If you are important then make a model, write a conceptual paper about it and check it by using CFA.

Best wishes
