Working on RMA in SPSS:

SPSS provides 4 ways of using RMA:

We have 2 cases: Noting 1 measure (dep var) or more than 1 measure (dep var)
We've 2 sort of analysis: Only Within group variations to be analyzed; Within as well as Between group variations to be analyzed

1 measure with Only within group variations--> Case (a)
1 measure with Within as wella s Between group variations--> Case (b)
More than 1 measure with Only within group variations--> Case (c)
More than 1 measure with Within as wella s Between group variations--> Case (d)

Hhmmm..... is it confusing??
Lets take examples of each.

a) RMA for comparing same measure among many categories (Called Within subject Factor here).
Ex: Marks given by 4 teachers to 8 essays.
Here each essay was evaluated by 4 teachers and we want to see whether there's any difference between the 4 teachers.
Dep var (Measure): Marks
Indep var: Teachers

Plz note there are no group (Between subject Factor) here so we can't calculate the between group variations.

b) RMA for comparing same measure among many categories as well as between groups (which will be called Between subject Factor here).
Ex: Marks given by 4 teachers to 8 essays (4 from boys & 4 from girls)
Here each essay was evaluated by 4 teachers and we want to see whether there's any difference between the 4 teachers as well as whether there are
variation in teachers's grades for boys & girls?
Dep var(Measure): Marks
Within var: Teachers
Factor (Between subject Factor): Gender

c) RMA for comparing many measure among many categories
Ex: Knowledge & Skills of 8 students are evaluated by 4 teachers.
Here each student was evaluated by 4 teachers and we want to see whether there's any difference between the 4 teachers in their grades given for Knowledge & Skills.
Dep var(Measure): Knowledge & Skills
Within var: Teachers
Plz note its not like MANOVA. Its just option given to save time i.e. instead of running RMA 2 times, just get answers in 1 shot. But the results will be as good as doing it separately. There're no interactions between the 2 measures.

d) RMA for comparing many measure among many categories as well as between groups.
Ex: Knowledge & Skills of 8 students (4 boys & 4 girls) are evaluated by 4 teachers.
Here each student was evaluated by 4 teachers and we want to see whether there's any difference between the 4 teachers in their grades given for Knowledge & Skills as well as their difference in grades for Knowledge & Skills
between the 2 genders.
Dep var(Measure): Knowledge & Skills
Within var: Teachers
Factor (Between subject Factor): Gender

From next post onwards we shall discuss all these cases by taking practical case studies.

Happy Learning
