Freelance data/data visualization journalist

The Oregonian/OregonLive is seeking a skilled journalist to work with the newsroom on a freelance basis to produce data analysis and visualizations as part of a new initiative.

We’re looking for someone who is equally adept at analyzing datasets and creating compelling graphics to make the findings pop.

The ideal journalist is comfortable plucking Census stats, scraping websites and merging disparate data sources to find untold stories. Just as important, we’re seeking someone who can turn that analysis into stimulating graphics, maps, charts and more – with an emphasis on producing interactive data visualizations for our growing online audience.

Necessary skills include experience with software such as Excel, Datawrapper and ArcGIS/QGIS, and a desire to brainstorm and work collaboratively. Knowledge of Python, Javascript, D3 and Github is a huge plus.

While The Oregonian/OregonLive is located in Portland, Oregon, this work could be completed remotely. Knowledge of the Portland area and Oregon is helpful but not required.

Interested? Email your résumé and five to 10 clips of your data visualizations and data analysis by Friday, July 2, to Brad Schmidt at bsch...@oregonian.com.
