POSITION SUMMARY

Quanta Magazine seeks a talented interactive web developer with a strong interest or background in science, math, design and media. In addition to working with Quanta’s award-winning editorial staff to dream up and create high-impact interactive features, explainers and templates, this developer will collaborate with other in-house developers and production staff to conceive and implement new and improved website features to better serve the magazine’s growing audience.

The interactive developer will be a skilled coder, creative problem solver and tech-savvy designer who is enthusiastic about Quanta’s mission to illuminate basic science and math research through public service journalism. Devotion to the highest standards in interactive web design, media ethics and scientific accuracy are a must.

This full-time position will report to the Web Development Team Lead and to Quanta’s Editor-in-Chief and will be based at the Simons Foundation offices in New York City.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research, plan and execute interactive content and front-end development for Quanta’s website, built on WordPress with a React front-end.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with editors, reporters, art staff and other developers.

  • Effectively manage priorities for multiple concurrent projects

  • Adapt to changing requirements

  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Skills:

  • At least three years’ experience in interactive/front-end development and data visualization, preferably in a scientific or science media setting.

  • Fluent in HTML5, CSS, Javascript, D3.js and/or similar data-visualization libraries.

  • Experience working on user interfaces and sensitive to the needs of a diverse set of users (in terms of accessibility and ease of use)

  • Attentive to creating experiences that work well on a wide variety of devices

  • Familiarity with Wordpress, React.js, PHP a plus. 

  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, an excellent communicator.

  • Must be an effective team player and have the ability to coordinate interactive and web development projects with editors, reporters and art staff.
