The Axios Visuals team is looking for someone specializing in data visualization to join our growing team. In this role, you will report, analyze and design data-driven news stories while working closely with reporters and editors. The Visuals team is part of a larger interdisciplinary design team, but is embedded within the newsroom — we take the lead on everything from charts and interactives to illustrations and custom story design.

#ABOUT THE JOB

COMMUNICATION:

We are a distributed team (DC, NYC, Midwest), so we value honest and effective communication. We keep in touch via a combination of Slack, video chat, and occasional retreats. That being said, if you want to work at Axios and are the right candidate, we don’t care where you live as long as you have a good internet connection.

RESEARCH, REPORTING AND DATA:

Above all, we are doing journalism. You should feel comfortable doing research and conducting reporting for both small and large projects. You will be looking at data all day. You should know how to evaluate a dataset to learn what it can and can’t say.

BALANCE:

We try and maintain a balance between small projects (1 hr to 1 day) and large projects (2 days to 2 weeks). We all do the small stuff so we can all do the big stuff. We tend to use the smaller graphics we make as spaces to try out new techniques and hone our skills. You should feel comfortable working at different paces and have a desire to tell unique stories centered around excellent data visualization.

DESIGN:

You should have a good understanding of layout, color and typography as it relates to information design.

TECH:

We clean up most of our charts using Adobe Illustrator. To explore the data, we’ve used D3, ggplot, node, python and excel among others. We’re not really picky, as long as what you use gets you from analysis to great data visualization. Maybe you can even teach us a thing or two!

#NOW ABOUT YOU

If what we’ve described sounds like a job you may like, here’s the type of person we’re looking for:

YOU CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE YOU WORK WITH:

We all benefit from helping each other work smarter and faster. We want someone who will both offer and request candid critique and is invested in the success of their colleagues.

YOU ARE INVENTIVE AND CURIOUS:

The self-initiated work we do should set the conversation for what is possible in data visualization. We should invent forms no one has seen before.

YOU ARE DETAILED AND THOROUGH:

There are a lot of moving parts in this field, and you should be someone who sweats the details. There is no better measure of quality than small details done well.

YOU WANT TO GET BETTER:

There is always going to be someone smarter than you, but maybe not as hard working. You should be someone who strives to improve with every project.
