The Knowledge Discovery Unit (http://smile.deri.ie/) at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (http://www.deri.ie/), National University of Ireland, Galway invites applications for a PhD fellowship in the

area of Data Visualisation, Visual Analytics, and Visual Management of Linked Data.  The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research into linking output from research applying distributional semantic models to traditional semantic web and linked data approaches  as well as conducting research into scalable Visual Analytics and Visual Knowledge Discovery.  The PhD position will be funded by INSIGHT – the new National Centre for Data Analytics <http://www.insight-centre.org/>, of which DERI is a founding center.

 

This PhD fellowship will be within the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI).  The National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) is home to more than 15,000 students across five Colleges with highly active agendas in teaching and research.  The University recently reaffirmed its research priorities and has placed Information and Communications Technology as one of its leading priorities.  The Digital Enterprise Research Institute is a key focus of ICT research at the university.

The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), Galway, Ireland was founded in 2003 following the granting of funds under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) CSET initiative (Centers for Science, Engineering and Technology). DERI is dedicated to research aimed at enabling Networked Knowledge using Semantic Web technologies. DERI is one of the leading research institutes in the world in its domain and has attracted over €60 million in direct research funding since 2003, together with significant industry involvement.

    Essential Skills:

  -  Bachelors or Masters in Knowledge Representation, Human Computer Interaction and Data 

     Visualisation or equivalent

   - solid programming skills in one language i.e. Java, C++, Python

   - strong user interface programming skills

   - knowledge of user interface evaluation methodologies.

   - good command of written and spoken English

 

    Desirable Skills:

    Experience in some of the following:

     Machine Learning, Data Visualisation, Visual Analytics, Linked Data management, advanced 

    statistical models, distributional semantic models

 

  

 

 The fellowship will have a duration of 4 years, with a tax free stipend of €1,500 per month and includes academic fees for the doctoral programme.

Remuneration: PhD fellowships are €1,500 per month (tax free).
