The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age are looking for a front-end web developer, skilled in cutting-edge web technologies and keen to use them to help tell stories that matter.
This is a chance to join an award-winning team of designers and coders embedded in one of Australia's dynamic and influential news organisations. As a member of the Presentation team, you'll build data-visualisations, experimental storytelling formats and new and exciting tools for gathering and presenting news.
The role offers variety and challenge, working within a supportive environment with an emphasis on learning and experimentation. The team needs someone who is proficient with modern web technologies and interested in news. There is real potential to define this role in line with your passions, interests and skills.
Requirements:- Experience or enthusiastic interest in working in a newsroom, helping Australia's best-read journalists cover stories of national importance through cutting-edge technology and design.
- Experience or enthusiastic interest in working in a multidisciplinary team, alongside designers, artists, editors and writers, to produce award-winning storytelling.
- Minimum 5 years experience in front-end development.
- Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of web development, including HTML, vanilla JavaScript, CSS.
- React experience is a must. You must be able to show examples of our work.
- A solid grasp of software engineering best practices, including Git version control.
Those are the essentials, but there are a huge number of ways this role could be shaped to fit the right candidate. If you're experienced or interested in one or more of the following, we want to hear about it:
- Experience in Node and/or PHP.
- Data visualisation, including libraries like D3.js and ggplot2.
- Design, either as a trained professional or interested amateur.
- Data journalism and related practices and tools, including web scrapers, R, the 'tidyverse', Python, spreadsheets and statistical methods.
- New web technologies like WebGL, WebXR and related tools, like Three.js, A-Frame and PIXI.js.
- Mapping and GIS tools, including ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet and Mapbox.
- Open-source investigative journalism and related tools and methods, including geolocation, chronolocation and media-source verification.
