Hello Fellow Scientists!

Thrilled to announce the launch of the "Research in Progress" collaborative meeting series for researchers—including staff, faculty, and students—who are interested in data science and AI or are those looking to incorporate these approaches into their research. These meetings will take place virtually monthly, bringing researchers from Main and North Campus to present their ongoing work and receive feedback from peers.

For presenters, this meeting offers an opportunity to practice formally explaining and presenting their unpublished or recent work. The audience will review, providing constructive feedback to help refine the research and identify any gaps. Additionally, we envision this platform as a way for researchers to discover complementary expertise and resources available within the campus—from code and computation to data and algorithms. Overall, we hope this initiative will enhance the quality of published research in data science at UNM and foster cross-campus collaboration.

Our meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month, with the inaugural session on September 12th. Dr. Kushal Virupakshappa will share his research on AI-based detection of solar elastosis—a severe sunburn condition—from histology, and its implications for melanoma at https://hsc-unm.zoom.us/my/avisahu.

To stay updated, please join our Google Group: https://groups.google.com/a/googlegroups.com/g/data-science-rip.

If interested in presenting your work, please sign up by contacting:

Feel free to forward this email to colleagues, students or others who might be interested in joining!

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you at our first meeting!

Best regards,
Melanie Moses and Avi Sahu
