Open Data Day 2014 in Kampala was
everything we had hoped it would be. We had
a diverse group of people in attendance, we had 13 great speakers sharing
their experiences with Open Data, and at the end of the day it seemed that we
all want to bring life to Open Data in Uganda. We appreciate your attendance,
without your contribution the day would not have been a success!
During the morning Reinier Battenberg (Mountbatten) taught us about the cycle
of Open Data; about those who have data, publish it, use it and give feedback
on the data used. We heard about other examples of open data and how London
earned 44 million pounds on a 1 million pound investment. Later we heard from
Bernard Muhwezi (UBOS), about their plans for opening Ugandas data. In the
afternoon we had 12 sessions to choose from! Everything from analysing data
with D3 and R to making maps beautiful using TileMill to discussing licensing
and telling stories with data.
We learned that there are many motivated people in Uganda who want to work
towards making Open Data sustainable. Moving forward we want to create a self
sufficient Open Data cycle in Uganda. At the end of the day it was agreed that
we shouldn't wait until Open Data Day 2015 to talk again, rather we should
take the next year to create working groups, host more (smaller) events, blog,
share ideas, create cool apps with Open Data and stay in touch through this
mailing list. Through this mailing list we can interact with each other and everyone can
share open data related ideas and events!
If you were inspired by Open Data Day to start opening some of your own datasets, you can start sharing your data today at www.data.ug! There you can also find the slide shows from Open Data Day.
