I need to set the 0x8 bit in the target's debug entry in boot args so
fwkpfv will work on the host box.

I can set boot-args in nvram while in Recovery mode, and can verify it
really did get set with "nvram -p". But when I boot normally, "nvram
-p" doesn't include boot-args, so I get no kprintf messages in my
terminal window.

This must be a common problem as it happens to me quite a lot, but
Google fails to yield insight.

Before today I was able to fix it by reinstalling the OS. But I just
today reinstalled to fix a filesystem that got corrupted because of
all my crashes.

I get a big check when my product goes to beta. But that big check is
getting farther and farther away.

Mike,

Haven’t had this issue. What OS? What hardware? I think I had a bit of a trouble with boot-args on a Mac Mini using OS Server. Not sure if there is a difference there.

But on some systems I am able to set boot-args when in single user mode and other times I have had to be in recovery mode. All of them have persisted across boots.

The only other issue could be nvram battery? Not usually a problem but a battery failure would keep clearing nvram.

Is the nvram erased or just the boot args set back to original value or null string?

I'm very grateful to all of you for answering my question.

I've been in the habit of holding down my Mac Pro's power button to
shut it off forcefully. That's because my driver sometimes panics the
machine when it's just been installed. Of course I have to get rid of
that panic but I'm focussing on power management right now.

In recent versions of OS X, one can only set the NVRAM while in
recovery mode. I've been doing that.

However it was pointed out to me that "nvram -p" shows what's in RAM.
To save it in the NVRAM one must do a clean shutdown.

I just now followed these gems of wisdom and got my Firewire logging back.
