New issue 2 by aliomattux: Sata will crash while copying files especially
in larger quantities. This issue has existed for some time.
http://code.google.com/p/darwin-ata/issues/detail?id=2

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. making or restoring an image
2. copying files especially large ones
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Ideneb 10.5.6, the nforceata.kext from this website for the 4gb fix,
voodoo kernel, currently 3 way raid stripe.
680i lt sli, 3x160gb sata 8800gts

Please provide any additional information below.
I originally had the installation on 1 drive without raid and it worked
better "less freezing" but the issue was still there.
Is there anyway to fix this problem? It makes it unusable.

It's a known issue. Can u please take a photo of the screen when it panics.
Then try with previous
AppleNForceAATA.kext and take another photo of the screen? Just to compare
kernel panics.

I wish I could, however it does not kernel panic. It just locks up and will
not
respond. I did try using the original nforceata that came with the install
with the
same result. your package is newer anyway. I did increase the memory
voltage and it
seemed to respond slightly better but still crashed everytime. If there was
some
kind of way to get a diagnostic result I would be glad to. It would be
something to
note, that I have never had an installation fail, even when installing to a
raid
with 3 drives. My board does not support ahci either.

If I bought a pci controller card and plugged my sata into that would it
fix the issue? Thanks

One more thing, If I type at the bootloader cpus=1 then the file copying is
very
reliable without crashing and it seems much faster. Mabe I should change
the kernel
too?

i have the same problem as the original poster. cpus=1 has been my cure
from the
beginning however this is certainly not optimal, especially for those with
quad
cores. NVIDIA nForce MCP 55 on Dell XPS 710 with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86.

It's definitely AppleNForceATA... running a vanilla kernel on Snow Leopard
now, and
this issue still exists... not as often as with Leopard, but still there,
do you guys
know what's causing it so it gets fixed when the 64-bit kext is released...?

I've been having the same problem with my sata hdd, system will not show a
kernel
panic, the drive just shuts down, os is still in memory and i can switch
windows and
such from what is open, but cant do anything else from there since the
drive can't
load anything. just get the spinning beachball and have to hard reboot.

system info:
leo 10.5.7 using voodoo 9.7 kernel
EVGA nforce 780i mobo with 4gb 800mhz ram, running at 667mhz (more stable
this way it
seems)
Intel Q6700 quad core cpu
WD Velociraptor 300gb drive
EVGA 9800gtx

Hi, I am the original poster of this issue. The Only solution as of yet to
this issue is the cpus= flag. Keep in mind
that it does not have to be cpus=1. I have used cpus=2 or you could even
try cpus=3 on a quad core. In my
configuration I have a Raid 0 with 2 drives, Yes I got raid to work.

exactly same prob.... on leo, snow, leo and lion.

evga 680i sli
4gb
10.6.8
imk64bit kext

randomly happens when copying huge files on disk or from inet or using
programs like digidesign protools, importing mp3s to itunes library. Never
instantly just after a while of huge load. dont know whether its a sata or
ram problem.

resulting in a spinning beachball freeze.

happens with and without ethernet running.

everythings running fine except those freezes.

never found anything to solve problem, not in slashhacks, verdants or any
other forum.

maxmem=3072 is the only boot flag you need. This is the only workaround I
have found it is a memory issue in this kext.

UPDATE!!!

I think I may have found the solution to this issue! I have had this issue
for some time I have recently rebuilt both of the members of my array using
the web GUI from highpoint and I am now running with all 6gb of my memory
with no esata crashes/beach ball or freezing. I am currently streaming HD
content to my apple tv via plex, watching hd content via plex on my pc,
playing audio to my airport express and copying large files to and from my
array all at the same time. If your having issues rebuild your ayyary
completely using the maxmem flag then you can get rid of the bootflag and
run smoothly!

Launchpad, mission control, safari, or itunes while rebuilding or your
array may crash! I believe while your array is rebuilding if you have a
PCI-E graphics card like my GTX280 any heavy graphics issue causes a issue
between your PCI-E RAID card and your Graphics card. Also if I right click
to copy or paste inside safari seems to disrupt my array for a second but
it doesn't reset. Weird but it works mostly hopefully this helps.

UPDATE!!!

it doesn't reset. Weird but it works mostly hopefully this helps. Maybe all
of these sata or esata raid issues are all linked to inconsistent arrays
internal or external and bad hard drives with bad sectors or bad data. If
all else fails format or rebuild! I am confident now that I could run osx
on my esata raid 10 array. Till USB 3.0 is working looks like we have a
great alternative for now. Enjoy
