The severe fi‑nancial crisis that hit high-income countries
after 2007 was an event of immense economic and political importance. It
undermined both the influence of the West in the global order and the
credibility of the western fi‑nancial system. Why did the crisis happen? Have we
learned the right lessons from it? What are its implications for the future?
These are the questions Martin Wolf will address in his lecture, which is
based on his new book, The Shifts and the Shocks. Chair by Prof Kishore
Mahbubani, Dean, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Martin Wolf is Associate Editor and Chief Economics
Commentator at the Financial Times. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the
British Empire) in 2000 for services to ‑financial journalism. Mr Wolf is an
honorary fellow of Oxford University’s Nu ffield College and Corpus Christi
College, the Oxford Institute for Economic Policy (Oxonia) and King’s College,
London. He is also an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham, a
Global Fellow of Columbia University in New York and a member of the World
Economic Forum’s International Media Council. He holds honorary doctorates from
Nottingham University, the London School of Economics, Warwick University and
Kingston University in the UK, and Macquarie University in Australia. Mr Wolf
has won numerous awards. Mr. Wolf was educated at Oxford University.

The Singapore-MIT
Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) is a major research enterprise
established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership
with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF) in 2007. SMART is the
first entity in the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise
(CREATE) being developed by NRF. SMART is MIT's first, and to-date only,
research centre outside the United States. It is also MIT's largest
international research programme. MIT faculty members have laboratories at
SMART, mentor postdoctoral associates and graduate students, and collaborate
with universities, research institutes and industries in Singapore and Asia.

Daniel Hastings, the Cecil and Ida Green Education
Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems, joined the
MIT faculty in 1985 and became a full professor in 1993. He has taught seminars
and courses in plasma physics, rocket propulsion, aerospace policy and
space-systems engineering. Dr. Hastings served as chief scientist to the U.S.
Air Force from 1997 to 1999. In that role, he served as chief scientific adviser
to the chief of staff and the secretary and provided assessments on a wide range
of scientific and technical issues affecting the Air Force mission. He led
several influential studies on where the Air Force should invest in space,
global energy projection, and options for a science and technology workforce for
the 21st century.
