Personal Data Protection Act
Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (“PDPA”) was passed by
Parliament on 15 Oct 2012. This Act affects everyone in Singapore, be you an
individual or a private business. The PDPA balances the right of individuals to
data privacy with the needs of organisations to use these information. Private
entities in possession of such data shall have to manage them to meet the
obligations imposed by the PDPA. By 2 Jul 2014, all private entities are
expected to be in full compliance. Organisations should start learning and
planning to meet its requirements or risk being fined. This talk shall introduce
you to this new regime. For individuals, it will sensitise you to your rights.
For private business entities, it will give you a bearing on how to prepare
yourselves for this new law. George Hwang obtained his LL.M. from King’s College
London. Through his career in MNCs and private practice George acquired
extensive knowledge and experience in intellectual property and data protection.

Interest Group: Modernism in Indian Art
Learn how “modern art” also
developed outside of the West, albeit with a difference. Our speaker Dr. Priya
Maholay-Jaradi will introduce several important Indian artists and their
practices from 1870s – 1960s to illustrate this “alternative modernity”. This
introduction will include the materials and technologies of art, the artist’s
style of working, sources of reference and the backdrop of India’s colonization
and nationalism, both of which shaped its search for modernity. Dr. Priya
Maholay-Jaradi received her MA in Art History and Archaeology from the School of
Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London (2001); and a doctorate from
National University of Singapore (2012). As a fellow at the International
Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden (2013) she initiated a project on
"Mapping Collecting Practices in Asia". She has worked as a curator in Mumbai,
and at the Asian Civilisations Museum and NUS Museum, Singapore.
