The talk will be chaired by Dr Ora-Orn Poocharoen, Assistant Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. SYNOPSIS • Has the digital revolution made it easier or harder for governments to keep secrets? ‑e controversies over WikiLeaks and Snowden disclosures, and excitement over Open Data initiatives and similar projects, might make us think we live in a new age of transparency. ‑e reality is more complicated. In many ways, technological change has actually complicated the task of monitoring government. And we should not underestimate the capacity of governments to react forcefully against transparency initiatives that threaten vital state interests

5. Monday, 02 Jun, 2014 07:00pm - 09:00pm - Harvard “Building Sustainable Cities: Finance and Innovation” by Harvard Business School Faculty John Macomber

As the world urbanizes and water and energy grow more dear, the private sector will have new opportunities to finance, build, and operate the components of new cities around the world. Governments in most nations – and in most cities - have capabilities quite different than those in Singapore. The private sector needs to step in and fill the capabilities gap. Product companies, real estate companies, infrastructure companies, planners and investors export pieces of the Singapore model in industry already. How can this best be done in the built environment? Join us to discuss how to segment markets, contain project and country risks, leverage technology, and select the offerings that can scale up, replicate, make money (and make a difference) in new and growing global cities serving hundreds of millions of people.

Venue: Tower Club, Board Room, Singapore, 9 Raffles Place, Board Room, Penthouse (62nd Floor), Republic Plaza Tower 1, Singapore 048619
Cost: See below
RSVP:
eve...@harvardclub.sg for registration & cost

John Macomber is a Senior Lecturer in the Finance unit at Harvard Business School. His professional background is in real estate and construction. Courses include “Innovation in Business, Energy and Environment” and “Building Cities: Infrastructure and Sustainability.” His work includes cities ranging from Singapore to Suzhou to Sao Paolo -- and from Mexico to Mumbai -- and companies ranging from infotech startups to multinational heavy equipment to real estate. Join us for this interactive discussion about the models, frameworks, steps, and best practices for private sector intervention in building sustainable cities.
