Spring Drinks!

Join us as we kick off a new Dartmouth tradition in Singapore!

Spring Drinks!

It's hot and muggy in sunny Singapore, but that's no excuse for us not to celebrate Spring in Hanover with drinks by the River, the Rochor River that is.

Kate has kindly volunteered to organise a gathering for the Dartmouth and Tuck community on Fri 22 May.

Let's start a new Dartmouth tradition in Singapore.

Those of you keeping track of these email communications will know that we are looking to organise more activities to help re-energize the club in Singapore. For a start, we are setting a target of having events in Singapore to coincide with the big weekends in Hanover. Hence, Spring Drinks, kindly organised by Kate, will happen on 22 May, just a few days after Green Key (see left panel for details). Please do join us. Hopefully, we can throw around a few ideas for Homecoming.

There is also a Facebook group of local alums, kindly started by Royce some time ago, that we are now leveraging for the club as well (thanks, Royce!). Do join the group if you are on Facebook.

As usual, the update from DUAL below. Any keen golfers who would like to organise a Dartmouth team for the Nanyang Business School Golf Challenge? Let me know!

9. Tuesday, 19 May, 2015 07:00pm - 09:00pm - Learning for the 21st Century by Dean Ranga Krishnan of the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore

The Internet is the 21st century replacement of the library. Google is the card catalog and Internet accessible web sites are the books, magazines and newspapers. We will share our insights from the way we learn what we characterize as an Internet-centric learning. We assert that curiosity drives learning and that mobile devices provide anyone with anywhere, anytime access to learning resources useful while chasing one's curiosity. But the key to learning is not just access to content but to facilitate its integration into learning. We adopted a stratified 3 step approach. The first is after students use the material to learn at home, they come in to class and are tested to see how much they learnt. Then they go into groups of 8 and teach each other and retake the test. Finally they work in the same small groups to assess if they can apply what they learn to solve difficult issues that are not easily solved. These steps engage and lead to application and development of the knowledge.

Venue: Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore, 8 College Road, Level 2 Amphitheatre, Singapore 169857
Cost: Admission is free, but please register by Tuesday, May 12th.

Prior to his Singapore move, Dr Krishnan was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Duke University Medical Center. A key decision-maker in the Singapore biomedical sciences community, Dr Krishnan has been the Chairman of the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) since 2013. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Clinical Research Institute at the Ministry of Health (MOH). In addition, Dr. Krishnan holds memberships on the board of the Health Sciences Authority, and Singapore Health Services Pte Ltd (SingHealth).
