Hi everyone,

I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all those who have been selected for GSoC 2025! It’s a huge achievement, and I wish you all the best in your open-source journey ahead. Make the most of this opportunity—you’ve earned it!

To those who didn’t make it this time (myself included), I want to say: don’t let this outcome define your worth or skills. Preparing a proposal and contributing to an organization is already a huge step forward, and every attempt builds experience. GSoC is competitive, and unfortunately, not every deserving candidate gets selected.

That said, I found some parts of the results a bit surprising and would be interested in discussing and learning more about the selection process—mainly to understand how we can improve for next time. I truly believe in fairness and transparency, and I think open conversation helps us grow as a community.

If anyone would like to share their experiences, thoughts, or feedback (on or off the record), I’d be grateful. And if you’re continuing to contribute to open source beyond GSoC, count me in—I’d love to stay connected and keep building together.

Warm regards,
Anandi Chovatiya

I'll second that: Lots of great proposals are not accepted because there are multiple great proposals for the same project idea.
I've reviewed proposals as a GSoC mentor with Dart, and before that Mozilla, and mentors often end up having a handful of really good proposals, but in the end you can only accept one for a given project.

Also do remember that there are lots of opportunities to contribute outside GSoC.

And more so this year than previous years. Just look at the official blog posts [1] and [2].
This year there was 15,240 applicants [1], last year it was only 6,518 [2], back when I was a GSoC contributor in 2010 there was only 3,464 applicants [3].
That's all to say: don't feel bad about not being accepted.

Best wishes!

Hi Jonas,

Thank you so much for the thoughtful message and for sharing those stats—it really helps put things into perspective. The level of competition this year is astounding, and I appreciate the encouragement you’ve offered to all of us who weren’t selected.

That said, I did want to share a small reflection. One thing I found a bit surprising this time was that the aspect of *community engagement*—which I genuinely focused on throughout the application phase—didn’t seem to carry as much weight in the final selections. I had hoped that proactive communication and collaboration with the org would count as a strong indicator of intent and alignment with open-source values.

Of course, I respect the mentors' decisions and understand that selecting just one proposal out of several excellent ones is extremely difficult. Still, I believe (and hope) that in the future, active engagement and community interaction might be considered more closely as a key part of a contributor’s commitment.

Regardless of the outcome, I’ve learned a lot through this process and remain motivated to continue contributing to Flutter and Dart outside of GSoC. I hope to be part of this journey for the long term.

Thanks again for your time and guidance.

Warm regards,
Anandi Chovatiya
