Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), after eluding the Searchers for months, finally sacrifices her freedom to let her brother, Jamie, escape. Even after being occupied by the gentle glowing stranded Wanderer, Melanie refuses to cede full control of body and mind to her luminous lodger.I didn't have any problem with the concept of this duality. It was just the implementation of this conceit that didn't work. Basically, we hear Melanie's voice in this internal debate with the Wanderer. Somehow, it never hit the right tenor for me.Be that as it may, after a soul-searching struggle, Wanderer/Melanie head for the hills to reunite with brother and her hunky boyfriend Jared (Max Irons). Cherchez l'homme. As the posters invoke, "Choose to Love." Indeed, once our heroine(s) are rescued by an outpost of non-hosting humans, the newly dubbed Wanda pairs up with her own boy toy, Ian (Jake Abel).
(03:06) Radiotopia offers a great deal as a rhetorical artifact for this project. The diverse selection of shows cover different themes and approaches and with them a number of strategies, representing alternate attitudes toward podcast innovation and style. There is also a nice balance of male and female voices across the podcasts, an intentional choice to bring more women into the male-dominated medium of podcasting (Radiotopia, 2014b). But while the shows are diverse, they are uniformly quality story-driven audio productions, with talented and inspired hosts and producers doing good work.
Some of the podcasts also use their platform to support the Black communityoutside of the digital space. This is perhaps best noted in Tea with Queen and J. and HIM. In the former, the hosts have a segment dedicated tofinancially supporting Black people who do not identify as cisgender malesbecause they recognize how they are disproportionally disparaged in societyand may be in need of extra financial assistance. The requests made in thissegment can range from asking for support of a business, organization orinitiative to sending money so that a particular individual can buy food.Although it is not an official segment of HIM., one of the hosts did speak about how he responds to requestsmade by the podcast listeners for food or financial assistance. In thesevarying ways, Black podcasts have a tendency to be community-oriented andare using their platforms to support the Black community, especially thosewhose life experiences are negatively impacted by multiple and intersectingsystems of oppression. Black podcasters may also view their podcasts as away to digitally connect different parts of the community that may begeographically separated.
