I'm going to hold off on experience for this week. At the conclusion
of next game (which should wrap up this adventure) I'll award XP for
both sessions. Hopefully each of you will earn enough XP to make it to
4th level for the next series of adventures should we continue. See
you in two weeks.

Built inside the mouth of an extinct volcano, the large town of
Cauldron is unlike any other that you’ve visited before. The city
rises up from its central lake at the bottom of the caldera, to the
walls of the town that ring the top edge of the mountain. The city
itself lies nestled on the edge of the Hellfurnaces, close to the
Amedio Jungle, on Oerth’s southern frontier about 200 miles south of
Sasserine, on Jeklea Bay. Cauldron attracts all kinds to its volcanic
walls – merchants, hunters, adventurers, thrill seekers, refugees, to
name a few- usually all for the same reason, the promise of a fresh
start to a hopefully prosperous life. You and some new found friends
were all drawn to Cauldron, from whatever part of Oerth you were from,
for this very reason.
Recently, the city was hit by a sudden string of kidnappings. The
victims ranged across the board in appearance and social standing –
men, women, humans, halflings, gnomes, dwarves, elves, seniors,
children, rich and poor. Nothing seemed to connect the crimes together
except that they occurred over a relatively short period of time. The
kidnappings were in fact orchestrated by a half-troll/dwarf slave
trader from the Underdark, named Kazmojen. He used his minions to
snatch victims from the streets of Cauldron until his plans were
finally thwarted by a daring group of adventurers, your group to be
precise, working on behalf of the Church of St. Cuthbert and a
merchant named Tyro Amberhelm.
After wrapping up loose ends and enjoying a short lived stint of
celebrity, things started to calm down. Though you all keep in touch,
usually meeting for an ale at the Tipped Tankard, your group has all
gone their separate ways to pursue their own own agendas. You also
occasionally cross paths with some of the other players involved in
solving the kidnappings – Fario, Fellian, Cromwell and Sally, the
adventuring barmaid at the Tankard. Of Coryston Pike and her band, you
have seen nothing. It’s rumored that she’s been looking for clues as
to location of Seth, the cleric of their party, who disappeared in the
Underdark. No sign of him was found after the Malachite Fortress was
cleaned out by the Temple of St. Cuthbert.
Now, it’s six months since these events transpired and life has
returned to normal in the city. Winter is fast approaching and the
citizens of Cauldron are busy shoring up their homes and businesses in
preparation for the upcoming flood season. Since the city is built in
a large bowl, the rainy season of winter can be quite dangerous. The
mouth of the volcano catches the falling rain with great efficiency
and the gutters of Cauldron quickly fill and become turbulent rivers
that more often than not overflow into the streets as they move down
the inner surface of the city to the lake below. Many years the rain
quickly overcomes the lake’s natural drainage and the water levels
slowly creep up, flooding the lower buildings and forcing the
inhabitants to flee for higher ground. Since the buildings along the
lakeshore tend to be poorly constructed and their inhabitants poor,
the damage do ne by these floods can be devastating.
After a particularly wet winter several decades ago, when the
city’s central lake flooded Ashe Avenue, completely submerging some of
the buildings, the city decided to do something about the problem.
Representatives from the churches of Pelor, Wee Jas, Kord and St.
Cuthbert, pooled their resources and created several wands of control
weather to combat the situation. That winter, the priests fought the
water using their wands, thus saving the city from another devastating
flood. So successful were their measures that after the rains,
Cauldron erupted into a massive festival that in the following years
grew into a tradition. The Flood Festival, as it became known, became
greater each year until it started before the first rains fell.
It is now less than two weeks before the festival is set to begin,
precluding the rains that soon come after....

Hi El,

So, you are running Cauldron? I was in that campaign a few months ago -
it was a good one. (Or at least the first half of it - the GM we had
has a history of not finishing campaigns, and that was one of many.)

Cat has moved out of the Tipped Tankard and has been renting a spare
room at Sally the Barmaid’s place. It’s not much of a room, bearing a
strong resemblance to a converted closet, but she’s not there all that
much. Besides, the price is right and there’s good company there when
she’s in town.

Cat’s life has gone back to much of what it had been before the
Jzadirune adventure. The brief bit of “fame” did her reputation some
good and has helped bring in a slightly better class of jobs. She has
been busy travelling the areas surrounding Cauldron. She has still
kept in touch with Fario and, through his association with Tyro, she’s
gotten a few plum assignments with wealthy merchants. She’s
(successfully) guarded several merchant caravans traveling between
Cauldron and Sasserine. She’s also made several forays into the Amedio
Jungle (and had a rather unhappy time with some weird colored fungi
that totally excited the mage she was escorting). Overall, she’s put
quite a few miles on her boots, improved her aim a bit, and earned a
decent living.

Cat still stops by the Tipped Tankard for a pint or two when she’s in
town. With the Rainy season about to start, she’s back in Cauldron
hoping to find a job that’ll keep her out of the worst of the wet.
Though if she finds such work, it’ll be a first for her as she seems
to normally get drenched this time of year. But, the Flood Festival
ought to bring some new merchants to town and just might be a source
of fruitful jobs….

Rielly had been very quiet since the group had left the underdark.
He blamed himself for the child's death. He wished he had, had more
strength to help her in the time he had.
He had tried to use the little fame he had to make contacts in the
government, hoping this would make it easier to get the first pick of
any jobs that came down the pike later.
Almost imdately after he returned, he had kept his promiss to the
kindly priest at his temple and been studying constantly to learn the
practices of becoming a Cleric. He took room there, if the priest had
any, and trained day to night. He only takes breaks when one of the
group's members requests aid or if he is needed to attend any city
affairs for the temple. He's worked to promote the temple as much as
he can, hoping to increase it's popularity among the population.
As the festival approches, Rielly is hard at work hanging as many
decorations around the temple and the exterior as he can find. He
spends an hour a day outside the temple happily greating passerbys and
inviting them in for ale and some roasted meat to help celebrate the
event.

Following the report of partial success to Jenya, Vich went a
different path then the group and kept with his mercenary lifestyle by
taking jobs with many of the factions in Cauldron. First he took a
multiple-role job with the Church of St Cuthbert to help with the
guarding of Keygan's home now a Outpost for the exploration of the
Underworld of Cauldron (Jzadirune and the Fortress), also searching
and securing the rest of Jzadirune/Fortress. The church using his
shortlived fame to increase its coffers it assigned him the job of
Escort/Guard and Tour guide to scholors and priests who wished to see
what remained of the fortress of Zenith Splintershield. However once
his fame had run its course he was shifted to a position more in line
with his skills and his beliefs, unemployment.
After performing the odd job around town, he tried his luck with
the town guard figuring that they would at least have a regular need
for a being of his skill set. It took an interview and being able to
defeat 3 of his other guards in non-lethal combat for the Captain of
the guard to consider him. But shorthanded the captain of the guard
agreed to allow him a limited-role job with the guard. It was called
by the guards, "Enforcement Support" but what it really should have
been called was 'Adventurer control'
Vich spent his time off-duty at the Tipped Tankard always drinking
water or watered down ale. Striking up a friendly chat once in a while
with Sally to keep informed of what is happening with her and the rest
of the group should they stop in the tankard. But normally he tries to
lose himself inside his own thoughts where he replays the Kazmojen
fight over and over again trying to figure out how he could have done
better and maybe saved that little girl.
With the festival coming up he regularly called to the poorer
districts of the city looking for people who need help with thieves
and sometimes with preparing their homes for the winter flood season.
The thieves sometimes simply need knocked upside their head for
stupidness (ie trying to rob a broke man) before being released.

After shaking the memories of filthy coins from his
mind, Thamior decided to get a job as an assistant to the gem shope.
Most of the day to day routine does not allow him to look for more
side jobs. The adrenaline from the adventure has subsided and he now
has put to task figuring out how to improve his abilites.
Tham has spent most of his free time tracking down other magic users
and studiying from them to get a better grasp on his magic abliites.
The arts require focus and practice, time it seems, will not give him
the perfection that he desires. The most revered sorcerers tell him
that the seceret to improving in the art form is not through
intelligence alone but through allowing your inner power to manifest.
Though meditation his mind opens more to the mystic energy and his
inner power rises to the surface little by little.
Physical skills come a readily through daily exercise. He has learned
to improve his ranged abilites, and his physical attack seems to have
also improved from the rigourous physical work out. His loft apartment
in the dreges section of town is perfect for working up a sweat at any
time during the day or night.
During the nights he would stop at pubs to talk with locals gaining
information to better study the lore and history of Cauldron. If lore
is true then it seems that a great many things lay dorment undernath
the city and stories that seem to be incredible are those that the old
tell with startaling detail. Could the stories be true?

After the brutal beating and near death experience he took in
the depths of the Malachite Fortress, Avskyvard took time for some
well needed rest. Staying at The Tipped Tankard, he enjoyed many
nights of telling anyone who would listen about the groups adventures
in the underdark, even buying the cutomers an occasional ale so they
would sit and listen to him.
Once Avskyvard had worn out the ears of most of the patrons, he
decided to delve into the spell book he had acquired on his adventure.
Taking the next 5 months, he studied ruthlessly to learn as many new
spells as he could. Avskyvard felt the only way he could protect
himself and his friends better than the last time, when he had to be
rescued by the very ones he had tried to help, was thru knowledge and
the power of new spells. Through diligent research Avskyvard has
reached a new level of power, able to cast more spells and more
powerful spells.
Emerging from his reclusive research Avskyvard is ready to head out
into the world again, ready to find more adventure with his new
companions, and ready to pull more levers.

Rielly decides to work mostly on helping the flood group, but will go
with the others to finish exploring the ruins if anyone asks.
He sits about finaly checking into some new gear, specificaly a magic
long sword.
The rest of his time is spent promoting the church of Heironious, and
trying to increase it's position in the city.
He'll spend some time offering any curitives he is compisated for,
healing spells and other spells to help increase donations to the
church.
(( Rielly is turning very ambition about getting the church a higher
position, he's not afraid to tell people about it's role in the flood
help, though he won't forget the others as well. ))

After returning to Cauldron, Thamior aids his friends in cleaning up
the city. He then assists the Gem shop and a few contacts in the city
in repairing the damage caused by the storm. During this time he
spends a good deal of effort tracing the individual who sold the
remaining wands to the city. Contacts are are tapped, bribes are paid
for quality information. In order to compete his quest Thamior
considers following a rumor that tells of a secret order that controls
both the Merchants guilds and the Thieves guilds.

He returns to the Cauldron Police Department far more experienced then
when he left however instead of being put back on Enforcement Support
squad. He is told that he will be only employed on a case by case
base. Unemployed and looking for something to help him carry his stuff
around easier he went to visit Skie's Treasury and finds just what he
was looking for. He continues his regularly visits to the Tippin
Tankard for drinks, to see how Sally is doing and to hear the gossip.
Possibly even seeing a group member now and then. Disliking being
unemployed so to speak, he sometimes explores the area around the town
including checking out the ruins with Rielly however his main task he
has set himself up to do is looking into what Church of Wee Jas thinks
are more useful magical items and didn't come out with the other
churchs to help with the flooding. He does take some time to help
promote Heironious with Rielly even competing in a Kord sponsored
fight and dedicating his wins to Heironious.

Mouse has family members to contact to let them know about Cat's
death. She sends a couple letters to Sasserine to Mouse's own mother
and to Cat's mother. Both work in a small apothecary shop there (which
they co-own with a 3rd sister plus a niece). Mouse knows that the news
will spread from there to the pretty much the rest of the Aunts,
Uncles, and cousins.

The one person not covered by that is Cat's father. Mouse's Uncle
Ranald (Cat's father) couldn't take city life and ended up a
stonemason in the village of Redgorge. The village is not too far from
Cauldron, so Mouse rides out there to give him the news in person. She
also passes along a few items of Cat's (like her greatbow) to him.

Mouse rests there a couple days before returning to Cauldron. She's
not sure whether she's going to settle in Cauldron or not yet, so she
tries to find some inexpensive temporary lodgings (like a room at the
Tipped Tankard).

Mouse is interested in improving her sword skills so she looks for a
training center starting near the town guard barracks thinking there
might be something near them. Otherwise, she's trying to save up to
enhance her swords with a bit of magic. She doesn't have quite enough
for it yet, so if any smaller jobs present themselves (caravan guard
or somesuch) she'll do that and do her best to save her pay.

Taking advantage of this time of peace and quiet, Avskyvard Brewbarrel
uses his well earned gold to delve deep into magic. Upon return to
Cauldron he has several goals to accomplish.

First for level up Avskyvard takes the spells Dispel magi and
Invisibility Sphere.

His second goal: after getting blinded in his last adventure, Avsky
decides to create a spell to let him be able to see if blinded again.
“Avskyvard's Third Eye” a divination spell, level 2, duration 10 min/
level, (based off See Invisibility for level and duration) casting
time 1 standard action, components V/M, Range touch. Recipient of
spell grows a third eye on his forehead that can see normal vision and
range. Material component is a preserved eyeball that is touched to
the forehead.

He then takes time to copy some spells from the spell book he acquired
on his first adventure Avsky adds to his spell book, Invisibility,
Mirror Image, Silent Image, and Disguise self.

With that done, Avsky then does some more research, studying carefully
to learn the spells Deep slumber, Spider climb, and Feather Fall.

Finally, he goes to Jenya’s c temple to purchase 5 clw potions. With
that done he sets about looking for a place to buy a Hide From Undead
potion.

If I’ve done all that correct I should be left with 138 gp.

Avskyvard helps with the search after a brief rest, then will examine
the scroll, casting read magic if needed, and open the potions cap,

---Reilly fought so should be involved in the treasure.

---Avsk, the scroll is divine magic. Three are three spells on the
scroll...mending, bless and detect animals and plants, you can't use
any of them. The potion is a muddy brown and smells like feet, you
like it.

---Sharra, The cloak on the branch has a faint aura, the boots and
sword both radiate a steady aura.

Shirra will try to get the boots off the impaled man and try them on. Maybe someone could
climb part way up the tree and then cut the thin limb off so we can get to the cloak.

If no one else does something about the cloak, Mouse will trying
climbing the tree high enough to get the cloak off its branch...
either breaking the branch as Shirra suggested or by using her bow as
a pole to poke it off. She's hoping that a combination of her
smallness and her climbing skills will help her do it without
injury.
